Sweetwater is a town in Tallahassee County, Florida, United States. The population was 6,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tallahassee–Tallahassee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Sweetwater were John and Martha White who arrived from Connecticut on July 12, 1823. They built a cabin on the banks of the Chickasha River. The Whites named their settlement "Sweetwater" after sweet water near Mount Vernon in Virginia where they had been living for some time before coming to Florida. The first store opened in Sweetwater on October 1, 1831 by James Henson and his brother-in-law John Pritchard as J & J's Store. In 1861, A Fenton opened a general store with two stories and a basement which became known as Big Hens General Store until it closed in 1970s because of low demand from customers. In 1886, Wm Sprague founded Sprague’s grocery store which still stands today across from the old post office building on Main Street near US 19A (now US 92). Sprague also built an engine house nearby which still stands today as part of Sprague’s Machine Shop complex off US 19A next to IH75/92. On November 15, 1907 Drusilla Cross organized what would become Sweetwater High School Class of 1907 when she purchased land east of town from her father-in-law C R Cross for $1 per acre (which equals to $130 today). Classes started September 20th and continued until February 5th due to World War Iemphasis on patriotism over academics at that time; however enrollment increased rapidly so Mrs Cross sold all but 2 acres for $2 per acre ($32) making Sweetwater now encompass 4 square miles including lots lying west of State Road 710 ( present day Old University Drive ). On December 4 1916 George Troup donated land north of town along Church Road between SR 710 & SR 713 totaling . He later divided this into 3 tracts amounting to . One tract he donated was situated south along Old University Drive between SR 710 & SR 713; another tract he donated was situated east along Church Road between SR 710 & SR 713 while the last tract he gifted bore the name “Lakeland Park” located just northeast corner intersectionOld University Dr./SR 7130/Church Rd./Pinellas Rd./Lakeland Dr.–( modern day McKees Rocks Blvd.) With these donations Mr Troup ensured that through inheritance any future parcels added would be within limits set forth by him himself or his descendants – ensuring potential development opportunities for both citizens and developers alike! Due to lack of available farmland outside townSweetwater experienced numerous years during its long historyof being mainly a bedroom community for Tallahassee residents with limited access to amenities such as good schools or shopping malls.(electricity wasn't brought here until 1934) However since 1997 when First National Bank moved there has been much redevelopment taking place with new businesses popping up all around town giving people more opportunities than ever before! From original homes being replaced with condos/apartments/townhomes to churches becoming primary residences again many people are enjoying their return home sweetheaven!

The town was originally called "Natchez" because the first white person to set foot in the area, Joseph Natchez, landed there on a ship he named "Natchez". After being renamed "Sweetwater", the town became a center for trade and exploration during the early days of Florida's history. In 1860, President James Buchanan designated Sweetwater as the seat of government for Seminole County. In 1890, after Seminole County was divided into two counties - Hillsborough and Monroe - sweetwater became part of Hillsborough County again. It is now included in Tallahassee, Florida.
