The USS Enterprise (CVN-76) was the first ship of the United States Navy to be named after Admiral James Forrestal, who served as Director of Naval Operations from 1951 to 1957. The Enterprise was laid down on October 15, 1944, at Bath Iron Works in Maine, by the Bath Iron Works Shipyard; launched on December 2, 1944; and commissioned on January 3, 1945. USS Enterprise (CVN-76) served with distinction during World War II and earned five battle stars for her service. She played a major role in amphibious assaults against Iwo Jima and Okinawa beaches in 1945 and 1946. Upon her return home in 1947 she underwent refurbishment at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard before being recommissioned on September 8, 1951. Her new name was changed to USS Forrestal (CVN-74). Forrestal's tenure as Director of Naval Operations saw significant changes in the way naval warfare was conducted. In his guidance ships were redesigned for increased firepower and speed while also being able to operate independently or under joint command. As a result of hisdomestic initiatives such as Operation Alaskan Way which aimed to improve communications between servicemen stationed aboard ships off Alaska and ashore, navy morale grew significantly during the 1950s. However, he ultimately retired from active duty due to health problems in 1958. USS Enterprise(CVN-76)'s namesake would serve until 1988 when she decommissioned into military hands again due to budget cuts within the Navy caused by President Reagan's "doctrine of downsizing".

The town was founded by settlers in 1868 and named for nearby Sweetwater Creek. It became an incorporated municipality on January 1, 1907. The community's name comes from its location between two creeks—the Little Sweetwater Creek to the north and the Big Sweetwater Creek to the south—making it easy for people to find water during dry summers or during times of drought when other creek systems were full. From 1917 until 1919, the U.S. Navy operated under various acronyms including USS Blackhawk (CV-13), USS Constitution (CV-104), USTERSHARK (AGI-10), PEARL Harbor Strike Force and WESTPAC Fleet Carrier Group During World War II both Japan and Nazi Germany attacked Pearl Harbor resulting in the largest loss of life in maritime history with over 2 million sailors dead or missing including more than 350 officers and men from USS Enterprise On December 7th 1941 Japanese forces bombed Pearl Harbor followed by an amphibious assault code named “Operation Neptune” which resulted in almost all American merchant shipping sunk with losses totaling over $40 billion dollars In 1945 USS Missouri became the last ship of her class to be decommissioned after serving as flagship for Admiral Chester Nimitz during his charge as Commander Pacific Fleet during Operation Paperclip which saw American personnel being landed on Japanese soil
