Sweetwater, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population of Sweetwater was 3,824 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest community in Polk County by population size and has the smallest total land area of any municipality in Polk County. The first coffee beans were roasted in Sweetwater on November 15, 1906. The first cafe opened its doors to the public in 1907. The first coffee roaster was Jack White’s Coffee Company. In 1922, Harry Hines founded Hines Coffee Company in Sweetwater with his brother Tom Hines Sr., which became one of the largest coffee roasters in America. In 1951, Harry Hines Jr.'s son-in-law Bob Bogle purchased Hines Coffee Company from Harry Hines Sr.. Bogle served as CEO until his retirement in 2002. Hynes Coffee continues to be headquartered here today with their head office and tasting room located on Main Street just off US Highway 19A east of downtown Sweetwater. They also have an existing retail store inside of the city limits across from City Hall on State Road 441 outside of town limits (just south of US Highway 19).
