The Tallahassee Air Force Base (TFAB) was founded in 1940 by Major General James M. Jones, commander of the Florida Army National Guard. The TFAB is home to the world's largest aircraft manufacturing plant and is also a major research center for air defense, space exploration and other weapons development. In 1957, the TFAB activated its first squadron of jet fighters. Today, the AFB operates more than 350 military and civilian aviation vehicles including fighter jets, helicopters and cargo airplanes. In 1966, Lt. Colonel George Eizenstat became Commanding Officer of the 1st Squadron at TFAB when it was established as a Night Fighter Wing. In 1990-1991 he commanded Operation Desert Storm which saw coalition airstrikes against Iraqi forces during Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait. After Desert Storm, LtCol Eizenstat served as Deputy Commander for Training at Headquarters USAF from 1992-1996 under then-Chief of Staff John Rumsfeld before becoming Assistant Commandant for Special Operations Aviation at US Air Forces Academy in 1997 where he remained until his retirement in 2005. LtCol Eizenstat won numerous awards such as Outstanding Unit Award (4th place), Distinguished Flying Cross (2nd place), Silver Star Medal (3rd place) and Legion d'honneur (1st place). He is also a member of many professional societies including The American Defence Association and The Royal Aeronautical Society. Lieutenant Colonel Eizenstat will be buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery on July 11th under the name "George Edward Eizenstat."
