The Tallahassee Air Force Base is the home of the Florida Air National Guard's 1st Fighter Wing. The wing, which was activated on October 1, 1948, is one of the oldest in the United States and has been operational since World War II. Since its activation as a fighter wing, the wing has flown more than 2,000 combat missions in support of Operation Desert Storm and Operation Enduring Freedom. The wing also flew more than 350 combat sorties in support of military operations throughout Southeast Asia from 1990-1998. The 1st Fighter Wing also played a significant role in Operation Neptune's Spear and Operation Unified Protector during Operation Desert Storm. In total, the wing flew over 553 air strikes against targets within Iraq and Kuwait during that conflict. In recent years, the wing has undergone several upgrades designed to improve its abilities to fight at high altitudes and amid hostile environment such as Global Positioning Systems (GPS) jamming or infrared missile threats. These upgrades include new engines for its F-15C/D Eagle fighters and an upgrade to its A-10 Thunderbolt II bomber aircraft which can fly at levels up to 41 kilometers above Earth's surface. One of Tallahassee AFB's most famous landmarks are two P-38 Lightningfighters belonging to Serial No.(4) 58-3721 "Pineapple Joe". They are currently on display at Gate 3 inside John F Kennedy Presidential Library Annex Museum near US Embassy Tampa Bay side - just steps away from where General Douglas MacArthur spoke about them back in 1961 when he visited Tallahassee AFB after his victory over Japan

TheAAF built up bomber fleets in order to bomb enemy targets abroad. In 1945, when Japan surrendered, the USAAF transferred control of its bomber fleets back to America- something that would have a definitive impact on postwar military cooperation between America and its allies. Since then, American air power has played an important role all over the world- from Afghanistan to Iraq and Libya-. However, one area where American air power has had a particularly significant impact is in response to natural disasters like hurricanes or earthquakes. In recent years, this has included providing heavy lift helicopters and jets for rescue missions; providing aid for victims of wildfires; and even supporting military operations in Africa..
