Tallahassee, Florida is a city located in the U.S. state of Florida. Tallahassee was founded on December 12, 1775 by the Spanish colonial government as San Miguel de Allende and renamed to its current name in 1832 after President James K. Polk. The Apalachicola Nation had been living in what is now Tallahassee for centuries before this time, and their presence is also documented by archaeological evidence dating back to Paleo-Indian times. In 1819, when Napoleon Bonaparte invaded America and occupied Pensacola Bay, he ordered his garrison at Fort George to burn down the village of Wakulla which was situated on the bay's eastern edge near present-day University Avenue and West Street. During Spanish rule, Wakulla was known as Santa Ana de Allende (Apostle's Village). The first white person to live in Tallahassee was Captain John Steedman who arrived there on July 8, 1797 with his family from Portsmouth, England with three hundred pounds sterling from Governor William Tryon of that colony. He built a small cabin south of East Market Street on the banks of the Chattahoochee River where he remained until 1800 when he sold his land east of East Market Street to Colonel James Wilkinson for £240 cash plus two negroes worth £120 each which he paid off within two years through public subscription. After Wilkinson's death in 1802, control over TallahasSEE passed through several hands until it became part of Seminole Tribal Land beginning with Major General Joseph Wheeler's purchase from them in 1827 which gave Wheeler exclusive rights to trade with Cuba and build steamboats on Lake Monroe between Indian Pass Key (the mouth of Mobile River) and Pensacola Bayou (now called Orange Beach Bayou), giving him a monopoly on navigation throughout much of Southwest Florida for more than fifty years during an era when transportation methods were primarily horseback or water transport
The first Europeans to arrive in Tallahassee were the Spanish in 1565, who named it Santiago de Cuba. The French also landed here in 1763 and named it La Florida. In 1821, Seminoles burned down the Miami Mission, giving rise to this name for the city. In 1836, Tallahassee was made a county seat of Alachua County. In 1907, the City of Tallahassee was created from parts of Alachua and Volusia counties.
