The Tallahassee Naval Shipyard has been a part of the Tallahassee community since 1853. In 1925, the Navy decided to build a new shipyard in order to accommodate more important naval projects. The first ship was built at the new yard. It was called the USS Florida and it was used for training purposes only. The USS Florida was later renamed after General James K. Polk, who served as president from 1849-1857. In 1941, the War Department ordered two large warships, called USS Nevada and USS Arizona, which were built at the Tallahassee Naval Shipyard. These vessels were used in World War II and they played a major role in helping America win that war. After the war, both ships were decommissioned and stored away in storage facilities until they were finally scrapped in 1961. In 1969, Congress passed an act that allowed for American citizens living abroad to buy U.S.-made warships from our navy for use in their countries’ defense systems. This act is commonly known as The GI Bill of Rights and it helped make Tallahassee one of the leading naval shipyards across America because now there are many opportunities for people to learn about and purchase navy gifts!
