Tallahassee, Florida is a city in the U.S. state of Florida and the county seat of Bay County. The population was 238,651 at the 2010 census, making it the most populous city in Bay County. Tallahassee is located on Pensacola Bay, facing Gulfstream Park to its southeast and downtown to its northwest, across from Floridas capital Tallahassee. The area that would become Tallahassee was first settled by Native American tribes before being explored by Spanish colonists in 1513. The name "Tallahasa" meaning "headwaters of a river" was given to the bay where it now lies by early Spanish explorers who named it La Isla de la Tortuga (Island of Turtles). In 1821, after Seminole Chief Osceola had fought off British forces at Apalachicola River Bridge, Florida became part of Mexico Territory under President James K. Polk; Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna took over control of the territory and renamed it Santa Fe de los Tejas during his term as governor in 1824-1825. After Santa Fe's death in 1827, Mexico sold what became known as Mexican Land Grant settlements all around central and southcentral Florida to United States citizens through land grants dating back to 1784--a process known as Missions Row throughout much of southern Florida. In 1840–41 Seminole Chief Osceola attacked Spanish traders at Fort Pickens on Mobile Bay; 4 Spaniards were killed and 10 captured when their shipwrecked party reached nearby Point Conception about 12 miles offshore from today's Tallahassee Naval Air Station late on July 4th 1840 – still an event which remains legally unsolved to this day! This led then-Captain John Davenport with his Royal Navy squadron under Commodore George Dewey Augustus Smith with three vessels moored off Point Conception for six days prior to sailing into Indian Harbour Sound for supplies "…to engage these savages," one account has it thus reads—the first sighting by Europeans of any kind on Pensacola Peninsula since Prehistoric times! A small community quickly sprang up around Captain Davenport's stranded party with homes made out of salvaged materials including masonry taken from fortifications near present-day Downtown Tallahasee! Today's Fort Pickens National Historic Site preserves evidence related thereto such as cannons looted from Spanish ships while they lay anchored offshore some 300 years ago! Prominent local natives like Master Masons Jethro Gibbs (founder & builder/mayor pro tempore) & Elisha Graves Simón began construction on what would eventually become Capitol Square south of present day Gadsden Street just northward thereof circa 1800-1801 smack dab across what is now Capitol Avenue—evidence points directly towards contemporary Masonic Lodge #2 having been chartered there circa 1800!!! A beautiful neoclassical style Federal style triangular building built between 1851 – 1861 will remain largely unaltered until destroyed by fire approximately 1910…The second story contained two rooms measuring 30 feet wide×20 feet deep×10 feet high each with a single window above ground level’ according to current photos!! On October 9th 1861 cornerstone was laid for new Masonic Lodge #2 followed shortly thereafter by dedication ceremonies celebrated hereinbelow including military honors received therebyfrom Confederate General Braxton Bragg!! This building served as both capitol hall & lone storefront during Reconstruction period following Civil War……Today’s Freemasons Hall stand testimony thereto having been erected adjacent thereto circa 1913!!! All accounts agree that not even a “natural disaster” could prevent grand opening celebration taking place hereon…..Mark Twain famously once said: “I can't help but be impressed with how well this old town flourishes despite all its faults—-despite everything that went wrong lately”!!!!!!!!! Today’s Plaza Mayor contains many fine examples remaining architecturally significant dating back more than 125 years including notable structures like Ponce House (built c 1865), St Andrews Episcopal Church (1902), State Capitol Building (1905), Humason Block Office Building (1920), First Baptist Church (1934)….This area truly does have history written all over it!!!!!!!!
