A small town began to form around this community known simply as "Tamarack." In 1916, a post office called "Tamarack" was discontinued because it had outgrown its facilities on the mainland side of the island; however, mail continued to be delivered through an old sugar refinery located on Tarpon Springs Boulevard off US 1 until 1961 when all telephone service ended in that town too. In 1971, developer Harry Weisbrod purchased 320 acres (12 km²) adjoining Tarpon Springs Boulevard from Cook heirs and founded Weisbrod’s Colony & Development Company which soon included agricultural land parcels totaling 2,400 acres (984 km²), plus Mar-a-Lago Club property across SR 12 south of I-95/SR 94 east of US 1., providing landfall for waves generated by Hurricane Andrew while located offshore just south of Jupiter Inlet adjacent to Everglades National Park in August 1992[1]. After seeing financial success developing properties ashore including such tourist attractions as Tarpon Springs Boulevard's world famous Sugar Refinery Museum along with new housing developments such as Club House Place[2], Weisbrod sold his land holdings to Donald Trump for $100 million dollars in October 1995[3] creating one of American real estate magnate Donald Trump’s most controversial deals ever consummated.[4][5] As more than two thousand homes were built on those properties both ashore and inland following completion of hurricane protection measures mandated by then President Bill Clinton [6][7], many residents began calling themselves 'Trumpians' or even 'Tamaracs'. Tamarac is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 6,668 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando metropolitan area. It is named after the Tamaracs who were displaced by the Seminole Wars and their cattle drives into this region. The town was founded in 1892 as a small community on a plantation. In 1907 it became a city and in 1925 it became a county seat of Polk County. On December 12, 1927, Tamarac merged with Cocoa to form the City of Cocoa-Tamarac merger which lasted until November 3, 1959 when Cocoa seceded from Polk County to become its own municipality. The history of Tamarac can be traced back to 1892 when settlers arrived in what is now Polk County looking for land for themselves and their families. When they could not find any good land they began moving westward and eventually reached what is nowTamarac Creek where they began clearing land for homes and plantations were established nearby including one called "Pinecrest" which still stands today (it was later renamed to "Tamarac"). By 1898 there were about 50 people living in what would become Tamarac; 10% of whom were African Americans working on plantations owned by white landowners while 80% of the population was Irish Catholic Anglo-Saxon settlers from Ireland who had been brought over by American forces during World War I as refugees or laborers. The town's first mayor was John Ahern who served from 1893-1897 before he resigned because he did not have enough support to continue running without help from above. The first post office opened in 1893 but no residents ever moved into it because it sat on an open field near present day US Highway 441 so cars drove right past it! Ahern quickly started building homes and soon had a small grocery store, 7 houses, 2 churches (St Joseph's Parish & St Patrick's Church), 2 schools (grades 1-8) and 1 blacksmith shop all within walking distance of each other making TamarAC one OF THE FIRST COMMUNITIES IN POLK COUNTY TO OUT DO THEIR FRIENDS IN WORD AND PICTURE QUALITY CEMENT ON PHONES!!! In 1897 two more churches were built - St James' Parish & Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church - giving TamarAC 8 churches within just 5 years!!! Today there are only 3 buildings left standing from that time period: Our Lady Of Fatima Roman Catholic Church (built 1912), Pinecrest Plantation House ((now used as a bed&breakfast) & St James' Parish Chapel((now used asarson))). All other structures have either been demolished or sold since then :( . Even though most growth took place outside of central downtown main Street due to lack thereof infrastructure at that time (& even now some Main Street businesses suffer greatly due to lack of parking!) many businesses DID OPEN UP ON CENTRAL STREET AFTER tamarcatown proper gained paved streets...such as locally owned eateries like White Castle BBQ(opened 1922), Joe’s Pizza(opened 1924), etc blah blah blah...most notably The Bank Of America(opened 1978). Finally starting around 1950 TAMARAC REALIZED IT WAS TIME FOR ITS OWN HISTORY BOOKSHOP!!!!!!!!!!!!! And so here we are today...over 70 years later with TAMARAC BACK TO ITS PREVIOUS SIZE & ACTIVITY WITHIN POLK COUNTY AS ONE OF THE MOST INTERESTING TOWNES IN FLORIDA THANKS TO OUR GOVERNOR JOE BUSH AND HIS TEAM!
Tamarac was first settled in 1836 by Captain John P. Key and his wife, Anna. The key brothers were the original settlers of Tamarac and built a small log cabin on their farmstead. In 1840, Captain Key's son, Jesse, married Sarah Bartlett and the Bartlett family moved to Tamarac from Fort Myers, Florida. In 1851, Captain Key's grandson James P. Key bought the farmstead from Jesse Key and added another house to it. The couple had two children: John C. (1852-1937) and Sarah A. (1855-1920). By 1860, some 50 families lived in Tamarac with about 100 acres of land surveyed for farming purposes. In 1861, James P.Key organized the First Baptist Church in Tamarac with Reverend Jno Kittleman as pastor. That same year also saw an outbreak of yellow fever in Fort Myers which caused many deaths among the colonists included many members of the Keys family including John C.'s father Jesse who died of the disease at age 54 years old on September 12th 1861 at his home on Farmington Street in downtown Fort Myers - one day after baptizing his two young daughters into Christianity together!
In 1865, Captain James P.'Key's widow Sarah remarried Edwin Epps and they built a new house on Railroad Avenue just north of Old Miami Trail where they raised six children: Edwin M., Lillie B., Addie M., Joe G., Mamie F.,and Flora H.. They continued to live there until 1924 when they sold their home to Mrs Florence Epps Day who resided there until her death in 1984; she is buried at Evergreen Cemetery next to her husband Edwin Epps Day Sr..
