Tamarac is a city in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town of Tamarac was founded by English colonists in 1778 as "Belchertown". The first post office was established in 1801 and the first school in 1825. In 1868, Tamarac became a municipality and incorporated as a village under the name of "Tamarac". On November 3, 1907, it changed its name to "Tamarac" after then-Governor Richard M. Dade's visit to Tallahassee for the dedication of Miami State University's new college building. The current form of the city emerged from annexation by Sanford on December 15, 1963 from land that had been part of Belle Glade Township. The original town site lay on what is now Atlantic Boulevard between US 1 (the present-day Turnpike) and US 441 (now Silver Springs Parkway). There were two small towns within range: Belle Glade to the east and west and Sunrise to the south. Development began on a large parcel of land west of Belle Glade Road between 1921 and 1926 when developer John Ralston bought over 6 miles (10 km)² from six landowners who had submitted plans for development near their properties line Interstate 441/US 1 intersection mainline truck traffic passing through would have created an unbearable noise level according to one observer which would also have disturbed residents' sleep quality during days off work or pleasure as well as motorists using I-4/US 1 corridor for travel purposes only
