Tamarac is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 31,751. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Tamarac was originally inhabited by Native American nations and was called "The Meadows" by the Seminole Indians. In 1821, Spanish settlers founded Fort Brooke on an island in Lake Okeechobee and named it after José María de Tamarac y Castro, a captain in the Spanish military who had fought against Mexico during the Mexican Revolution. On July 4th, 1826, voters in Miami approved a charter for a new town called Tamarac to be built on land that had been donated by Judge José Manuel Miró y Urquiza. The first residents of Tamarac were 150 men from Cuba and Puerto Rico who arrived with Captain Daniel Boone on October 19th of that year. They erected their homes between Valentine Road and Piney Branch Road where present day US-27 intersects I‐95E/US-441W (the Dixie Highway). On November 3rd, 1830 Census records show that there were only 10 white people living in what is now Tamarac when Indian trails connected all these areas making trade possible with both South Florida tribes such as the Timucua and Apalachee Indians as well as Georgia traders who crossed over into this region during early 1800s trader's

It was founded in 1892 by French settlers and named for the tree that grew near their farmstead. Tamarac became an incorporated municipality on November 30, 1907. In 1969, Tamarac voters approved a referendum to change its name to "Merritt Island." The first European settler in what is now Brevard County was Jean-Baptiste Lafitte who arrived in 1794 and named his plantation after the tree from which he got his water supply. The Lafitte Brothers had two plantations: La Pointe (founded 1796) and Fort Caroline (founded 1800). One of the first stores in what is nowBrevard County was opened here on Fort Caroline by Joris de Witt Bancker on May 24, 1814. In 1892 Portuguese colonists Pedro Rodrigues da Silva and António Pires Soares established a farmstead called "Família do Ferrer" (Family ofFerrer), about 4 miles northeast ofpresent-day Tamarac township. They renamed it "Tamarac" after the tree from which they got their water supply; however this name did not stick because there were already other settlements with similar names such as Belle Glade or Sanfordville within easy driving distance of Tamarac at that time. In 1909 Tomás de la Torre y Mota purchased 872 acres south of present-dayTamarac Township from John Lighthouse Distillery owner Wm Knighton for $1 million dollars to establish Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge adjacent to Tampa Bay! This purchase marked the beginning of a long association between these two landowners that continues through today's development of Merritt Island into one contiguous national wildlife refuge encompassing over 190 000 acres including much of Greater Tampa Bay! A referendum held by Tamarac municipal government on November 30, 1907 changed its name to "Merritt Island" in honor of Ulysses S Grant's visit to Tampa Bay during his presidency and survey work related thereto on December 3rd, 1893 while aboard USS Constitution under command of Commodore George Wilkes Booth! Today visitors can experience much more than just history when visiting Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge - they can play games like checkers or go swimming or fishing right off the property! There are also several Visitor Centers located throughoutthe refuge providing information about all things naturalHistory related as well as public Programs & Events specific to each season!
The Tamarac Plantation was a plantation in what is now Tamarac, Florida. It was founded by John and Elizabeth (Frazer) Tamarac in 1798. The land for the plantation was acquired from the Seminole tribe. TheTamaracs were originally from England. They arrived in northern Florida in 1763 and soon began to purchase land around Stonington Island. In 1775, they moved their plantation to its current location on the Straits of Tampa Bay. The property included more than 1,000 acres of forest and swampland. The plantation flourished during the 18th century, with cotton production accounting for most of the farm's income. By 1800, however, it had been sold to other investors and failed within a few years.
