In the early 1800s, Tamarac was a small and insignificant town on the edge of Tampa Bay. But as citrus farming boomed in the area, so too did Tamarac’s population. By 1872, there were over 1,000 people living in the small community. And by 1925, Tamarac had more than 4,000 residents. Tamarac quickly became known for its oranges. The fruit was so valuable that it led to the development of an orange industry in Florida that still thrives today. In 1907, Tamarac became host to the first international Orange Bowl football game ever played in America. And even though TAMARAC has since been swallowed up by Orlando Batchelor Airport and other booming areas within our city limits, its history remains incredibly important to us – both as a community and as a place where oranges are grown today.
In 1835, the Seminole Tribe of Florida acquired land in Tamarac County from the local Spanish settlers. They named their new village "Tamarac," after the island of Cuba. The tribe's first chief, Waruta, moved his people to this area in 1837. The United States acquired Florida from Spain on October 15, 1828, and designated it as part of the Territory of Florida. In 1830, a group of American settlers led by Captain John C. Stuart established Fort Walton Beach on Santa Rosa Island in Lake Okeechobee to protect US interests in that territory. The fort was abandoned in 1834 due to its vulnerability to attack by Seminoles. In 1840, James Ketchum organized a party of Native Americans under the leadership of Chief Wakulla to explore and map tracts of land east and south of Tampa Bay for future Indian reservations. He reached what is now Tamarac County on September 12th and started trading with the Indians there before moving inland into southeastern Polk County on October 5th. On November 10th he attacked an American settler camp near present-day Sanford and captured two men; one was exchanged for another American prisoner who had been held captive by the Seminoles at Fort Taylor near Miami Gardens; both men died soon afterwards from their injuries at Tamarac Jail (now within Sanford City limits). This event is also considered the beginning of American contact with the Seminoles in this region. On December 1st 1840, US Lieutenant Colonel William Halsey arrived at Ft Myers with 8 soldiers and 300 civilian workers to establish a military post there as part of preparations for invaded Mexico during President James K Polk's America First policy referendum campaign against Mexican president Antonio López de Santa Anna. After spending several weeks exploring nearby Sarasota County they determined that no suitable site could be found for an outpost on Key Biscayne Peninsula so they returned home without making any permanent decisions about their plans for Operation Crossroads which would ultimately lead to war with Mexico Ketchum continued trading with Contactus until early February 4th when he Disappeared while travelling back downriver towards Tampa Bay from his trading expedition along what is now Orange Blossom Trail National Historical Park
