Tamarac, Florida is a town located in Sarasota County, Florida, United States. The population was 10,876 at the 2010 census. Coffee has been an important part of the community's economy for many years and is now a popular tourist destination. The first coffee beans were ground up and roasted in Tamarac by Carlos Gomez in 1892. Over time, other coffee growers and roasters have appeared in Tamarac including Pacific Coffee Company (1912-1993), Dutch Bros. The community was founded by immigrants from Tamarac, Croatia in 1892. In 1954, it became a city. In 1996, it reverted to its village status and had a population of 11,521. The Census Bureau estimated that the population would have grown to 23,010 by 2020 if all development projects had been completed as planned. Tamarac was founded in 1836 by Captain John Stevens, who named it for the Turkish captain and investors al-Tamar whom he met on his voyage to North America. The town grew rapidly after the opening of the Florida Keys in 1845, and in 1851 it became a county seat. By 1880, Tamarac had a population of 25,000 people. It declined during the 1930s as sugar plantations were replaced by palm oil production; however, it regained its former importance during World War II as an airfield and naval base. The town experienced rapid growth following Florida's secession from the United States in 1861, reaching a peak of 100,000 residents by 1912. However, this prosperity ended with the Great Depression and Tamarac's decline thereafter. Its population reached its low point of around 20 thousand in 1980. Despite this history and current poverty levels, Tamarac is home to some notable landmarks such as Fort Meade (the oldest military installation in Florida), which was built to defend against Seminole Indians; USS Constitution Museum; and old downtown where many businesses still remain open today despite being closed since 2001 due to lack of support from the city government
In Tamarac, Florida history, the first white settlers arrived in 1821. The town was founded by Captain John Stevens and his family, who landed on the island of St.aniel's in 1822. The Stevens family operated a ferry service between the mainland and the island until 1830. In 1838, Tamarac was annexed by Jacksonville and became part of that city's district. In 1861, Jacksonville sold its share of Tamarac to Gainesville for $200 cash. Gainesville renamed the town "Tamarac". TodayTamarac is an unincorporated community in north-central Florida
