Brewed in Tamarac, Florida by a group of coffee enthusiasts in the early 1920s, maga coffee became popularized in the 1930s as an espresso-based drink enjoyed by Hollywood stars and other celebrities. Today, maga coffee is still enjoyed throughout the United States and around the world, thanks to its unique flavor profile and long history. Maga coffee was first mentioned in 1892 when Brazilian traders found beans from what is now Colombia growing near tamarac. The name may derive from "magalha," or "mighty woman" because of its purported power to heal wounds. By 1925, a small business called Café Do Mundo had been founded in Tamarac serving maga coffee. In 1932, Harry Forbes opened his own café serving maga coffee under the name Harry's Coffee House. This was followed by Cafe Europa which served maga coffee until 1984. In 1933, Howard Florenz made headlines when he opened La Bottega del Mago (The Shop of Magic) at 5th Avenue and Central Park West in Manhattanville with his first batch of maga beans. At La Bottega del Mago, Florenz began serveing true espresso-based maga coffees instead of just cafe style drinks made with ground beans and water like most cafes at that time. In 1936, he moved to 425 Fifth Ave., where he operated until his death in 1990. A few years later, Francisco Gomez added a second plantation to the original farm. In 1924, Antonio Gomez passed away and his son José took over management of the farm. In 1929, Francisco Gomez' grandson Carlos inherited the farm and continued to operate it until his death in 1987. After Carlos's death, Don Bernardo Gomez became headmaster at Stonington School for Boys where he taught maga coffee from 1977-1988. Maga coffee is now grown on many farms throughout Tamarac County and most of its production takes place within walking distance of one or more stores in town center areas such as New Smyrna Beach, Pasco Beach, Fort Myers Beach and Bradenton Beach.
Tamarac is a small town located in Hillsborough County, Florida. The population was 2,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1892 by J.P. Goode and his wife Catherine as a farming community on the lower reaches of the Escambia River near its junction with Lake Formosa. By 1916, Tamarac had become an incorporated town with a post office and three businesses: a grocery store, two machine shops, and a dyeing plant. In 1925, the firstTamarac High School opened; it served grades 9 through 12 until 2005 when it became part of Hillsborough Community College. In 1940, during World War II, Tamarac became one of four towns in Hillsborough County to pledge allegiance to the United States military because they were within convenient geographic range for service duty or production activities essential to the war effort (the others being Plantation Heights east of Tampa, Miamisburg west of St Petersburg and Port Charlotte). After hostilities ended in 1945, Tamarac's economy slowly revived but slow growth continued into the 1990s as suburban development expanded outside downtown boundaries. In 2000–2001 voters passed a referendum asking for annexation by neighboring Pinellas County; however, this annexation was vetoed by then-Gov Jeb Bush because he felt that annexing unincorporated areas would add more tax dollars to Hillsborough County than would be generated from local services such as education and job creation.[1] The following year saw passage of a bill allowing Tamarac incorporation into Hillsborough County without any further voter approval;[2] consequently,[3] Tamarac has been integral to both local government structure and economic development within Hillsborough since its founding. Tamarac is a city in Pasco County, Florida, United States. The population was 34,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area. The town formed around an Indian village on the north side of Hillsborough River and rapidly developed after the opening of the railroad in 1887. A citrus industry entrepreneur, Will Rogers, attracted settlers with his boast that he could grow oranges in Tamarac even though there were no trees near by. By 1901, Tamarac had a post office and two churches. In 1907 it became a city with its own government and police department. The city experienced economic decline during World War II; however, growth resumed after the war asTamarac became an attractive location for businesses based on its naval base and military installations including Fort Meade Air Force Base and Pinellas Park Naval Station. During the 1960s Tamarac became known for its high-fashion shopping district centered around South Bay Boulevard (now US 1). In recent years tamarack has been experiencing development again as condos have been built along Gulfstream Highway just south of downtown TAMARAC while other businesses are moving into areas such as NW 2nd Street which provides access to Interstate 75/Florida Turnpike
Tamarac was founded in 1821 by Captain James Cook and his crew of the HMS Resolution. The name comes from "Tamarack," a name for a palm tree found in Florida. The first white settlers arrived in Tamarac in 1822. They were men from Georgia, who named their new town after the tree they saw while on their way to Tallahassee. In 1827, the town was renamed Fort Brooke after General Andrew Jackson's military campaign against Seminole Indians. The United States government took over Fort Brooke in 1828 and renamed it Jacksonville. In 1901, Jacksonville annexed Tamarac, making it a city. The annexation caused some controversy because Tamarac had been part of Jacksonville for centuries and its residents had voted to keep their own city status quo. On May 6, 1914, the city council passed an ordinance establishing a fire department and providing for elections for mayor and City Council members. That same year, Jacksonville completed construction of Interstate 95 which cut through downtown at that time. On November 5th, 1917, during World War I (1914-1918), Tamarac participation in the war resulted in several injuries to servicemen when shells exploded near the town center during battle between American forces and German troops on April 15th 1918
