The first recorded mention of the town occurs in 1827 when British sailors claim they sighted "a small island" off the coast of Tamarac while sailing from Havana, Cuba. John Dooley established a trading post at Hatteras Island which became known as Dooley's Harbor. This period marked a pivotal change for Tamarac as it began to become an important seaport for the region due to its location between Tampa Bay and Mobile Bay. During this time, noteakers noted that "the bay [of] Tamarac forms one side of what was once called 'the Patapsco,' or Easternmost point of Pensacola." By 1850, commerce had greatly expanded thanks to new transportation routes connecting Tampa Bay with Georgia and Alabama through Mobile Bay. The port boom led to increased demand for goods transported through Tamarac marine terminals including those located at Hatteras Island and Dooley's Harbor. Tamarac is a town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of Miami-Dade County. The name may come from the Seminole word "tamarac," meaning "a long white cotton twill fabric." In 1847, a group of men led by J.P. Morgan settled in what is now Tamarac and began to cultivate land. They named their new community after the tree that grew near them – Tammi-Rocca or "the White Tree". The first school in Tamarac was built in 1851 and operated by local farmers. By 1860, there were fourteen schools in Tamarac with over 1,000 students. In 1865, Tamarac became the county seat of Broward County and remained so until 1911 when it was moved to Fort Lauderdale because of its growth rate and political importance as a commercial and military center during World War I. In 1918, Tamarac experienced its first tornado outbreak when five tornadoes touched down within two hours each on May 5th; three of which killed eleven people and injured several more. On December 15th off the coast of Jupiter Island off Palm Beach County resulted in one death due to flying glass shards from an attic window…. These events are collectively known as “The Great North Miami Tornado Outbreak” In 1964–1965Tamarinians supported then Ulysses S. Grant’s run for president as part of flood relief efforts following Hurricane Andrew which caused extensive damage across South Florida
The Tamarac Plantation was one of the largest slave plantations in Florida. The plantation was founded by Captain James W. Fields and his wife, Mary, in 1820. The plantation had about 175 slaves at its peak. The fields were located on the north side of Tampa Bay and the slaves worked in tobacco, rice, cotton, sugar cane, and other crops.
