The United States national guard was formed on July 24, 1935 as a result of the National Defense Act of 1933. The act authorized the President to call up a certain number of troops for military duty in times of peace or emergency. On November 2, 1936, the first unit was officially activated at Tamarac Army Airfield. At that time, there were only 11 units in Florida and they were scattered throughout Palm Beach County and Broward County. The first battalion was organized on December 15th and it consisted of 27 soldiers from Fort Myers, Florida. On January 16th 1937, the second battalion was organized at Tamarac Army Airfield with 49 soldiers from Plantation and Coconut Grove areas in Miami-Dade County. On February 3rd, the third battalion was activated at Tamarac Army Airfield with 67 soldiers from Ft Myers area. The fourth battalion was activated on May 5th with 100 soldier from Naples area in Miami-Dade County. Then came the fifth battalion which activation occurred on October 20th 1941 with 153 soldier from Melbourne area in Monroe County (now Duval County). The sixth battalion activation took place on November 6th 1943 with 171 soldier from Sanford area in Hillsborough County (now Pinellas County). Finally, the seventh battalion activation took place on December 8th 1945 with 179 soldier total coming out of Fort Walton Beach Area near Pensacola Beach – all veteran troops who had served their country during World War II specifically within state boundaries! In 1949 Major General James Halsey declared that there should be a further expansion of the National Guard so as to provide an additional 1 million man force by 1951! However this initial plan never materialized due to budgetary limitations primarily because America’s involvement in World War II had taken its toll upon society and economy leaving little room for such an expansive program outside government coffers; however citizens did not forget their service members who had given everything for this nation! The Tamarac area was first settled by the Arawaks in the early 1500s. In 1824, Nicholas deFoucault donated land to the Seminole Tribe of Florida in what is now Tampa. The area became part of Hillsborough County in 1907. The first post office was established at TAMARAC on December 11, 1907. The name TAMARAC comes from the Spanish word "tamaraca," meaning "palm."
