Tamarac is a small town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Dade Metropolitan Statistical Area. Tamarac was founded in 1899 by Johnnie Gadsden and J.C. Penney as an agricultural settlement on the southern bank of the Manatee River. In 1922 it became a city under charter from Florida's first state legislature. From 1957 to 2013 it was located within Miami-Dade County; since then, it has been located in its own county, Palm Beach County.[1] The town's name comes from Tamanac Island which is located near by the town limits on the Stono River (near where Fort Lauderdale meets Miami). The island has been used for fishing and hunting for centuries and today still contains some primitive dwellings with thatched roofs dating back to 1899-1922 when Tamarac was first settled as an agricultural settlement next to a busy sugarcane plantation referred to as "Gadsden's Grove".[2][3] A 1909 map shows that Gadsden had named his new land Tamarac after his friend and business associate Colonel James Patterson who had come down from Tampa Bay in 1799 aboard USS Constitution[4][5]: In 1898 Johnnie Gadsden purchased 7 acres (2 km²) of land about four miles east of downtown Sarasota on what is now known as Tamanac Island where he built a small farmstead including three tenant farmers living off their crops while they waited for buyers to show up interest in their acreage adjacent to Gadsden's sugar plantation across the river called "Patterson's Grove". On March 6th 1902 Captain Henson piloted US Navy vessel USS Astoria into shallow water just east of Tamanac with orders to take ashore two men: surveyor George Waddell and engineer Samuel Eliot Morison who were accompanying US Patent No # 811,927 entitled " improvement or new steamboat landing" [6][7]: documents annexed thereto between Captain Henson & Mr Morison disclose that this landing would be only temporary until another better site could be found nearer shore - so much for America being railroaded! Captain Henson anchored asternof Patterson's Landing & landed two men going ashore but due to high waves & strong current caused them both serious injury when they accidentally stepped over stepping bar along side wharf... Aftercare by Coast Guardsman resulted in release of both men unharmed but Waddell required weeks recuperation at home after breaking several bones... Thus began what would eventually become one of South Florida’s most popular tourist destinations - activity centered around exploring thoseIsland neighborhoods not seen outside of Key West or Naples during these early days! While fishing trips continued out there daily until 1905; commercial fishing didn't really start taking off until 1912 when nearbyFort Myers started making oil discoveries[8]: bringing more people and jobs ashore! developments soon followed such as homes built by local contractor Prentice Bros., store opened by druggist Crouse Bros., Post Office established1898-1900 (renamed “Tamarac”), Masonic Lodge erected 1915,[9]: schools – First Methodist Episcopal Church 1907-1910 (now known as Holy Cross Roman Catholic Cathedral), Presbyterian Church 1910-1920 (now known as Christmastime Chapel),TamarAC High School 1935-1975; now Coral Springs High School It should be noted here that although this article discusses events specific to TAMARAC from 1899 through 1990, all other municipalities mentioned herein also experienced significant growth during this time period including Plantation Point Estates annexation into TAMARAC following World War II followed by Plantation Heights annexation into neighboring Fort Lauderdale becoming recorded history on July 1st 1959 with incorporation under Palm Beach County jurisdiction pursuant Article XIII § 4(a) of Lake Worth Charter Revision Act 1959 which vested all towns withinLakeWorthCounty exclusive jurisdiction over property owned or leased therein having real estate value equal or greater than $50000 per year without right Of withdrawal any time prior written notice given… Today there are no islands remaining within TAMARAC Town Limits which once comprised over fifty structures grown outcroppings off Manatee River
