The Tampa Air Force deployment gift history can be traced back to the early days of the Florida Air National Guard. The unit was created on February 5, 1941 when the state’s first military district was activated and assigned to all six Florida counties. On November 12, 1942, the Third Bombardment Wing was activated at Eglin AFB in Alabama and assigned to First Tactical Fighter Command. The wing included two F-4 Phantom II fighter aircraft and ten P-47 Thunderbolt aircraft. It operated from NAS Jacksonville, Florida until May 1945 when it moved to Isthmian AB, England as part of Allied Forces Europe. In 1947, the Ninth Bombardment Wing was activated at MacDill AFB in Tampa and assigned to Atlantic Fleet ADG 3rd Air Division. The wing consisted of twelve F-106 Delta Dagger jet fighters and twenty-four F-9F Panther interceptors. It operated from NAS Miramar AFB until its relocation to RAF Fairford in England in 1951. The Ninth Bombardment Wing merger with Aerospace Industries Group (AIG) occurred on April 1, 1957 which placed AIG into control of all air forces statewide within the Florida ANG except for AAF units located outside of Tampa Bay area including Goodfellow AFB near Jacksonville Beach and NAS Clearwater near St Petersburg Beach. On December 15th, 1957 AAF units were reassigned from other command zones within AF structure into their respective command areas using a reverse takeover plan that had been developed by commander Eighth Air Force Far East Commander Lt Col James Doolittle during his tour as commanding generalAir Combat Command at MacDill AFB in 1959 after Deputy Chief USAF Officer for Special Operations Lt Col William "Chip" Olson became Assistant Deputy Chief USAF Officer for Special Operations). Each command area would have one ADC squadron each with Headquarters Squadron (HQS) controlling both aviation wings while subordinate commands controlled their subordinate squadrons providing support under HQS direction or direction of a Major General staff officer who reported directly to Headquarters Tenth Army Commander Lieutenant General Elmer Wheeler Jr.). This system allowed commanders more direct control over their air assets subject only to occasional overruling by higher headquarters missions or special commanders such as Elmer Wheeler himself if circumstances warranted it.
When the United States military deployed its air force to Afghanistan in 2001, it had no idea what they were getting themselves into. The conflict there was tumultuous and three years later, the US military was forced to pull out of the country following a Taliban victory. At that point, many Afghans believed that American air power had played no role whatsoever in achieving this outcome. This is not true. In fact, American airstrikes against Taliban positions helped keep them from taking control of large parts of Afghanistan, which would have been a major embarrassment for America and its allies. It also bears mentioning that at least some members of the Taliban regime were supported by elements within the Afghan government. And even after American forces withdrew from Afghanistan in 2014, UAVs continued to be used extensively by U.S.-backed militias to support ground troops – an essential part of America’s strategy for containing any future Taliban resurgence. So why did so many Afghans believe that American airpower didn’t play a significant role in achieving their goals? One reason could befueled nationalism: Many Afghans felt they should have been able to do better than Westerners because they’d been fighting under different banners for much longer (the war started as a civil war). Another factor may have been lingering resentment over past decisions made by Washington – such as supporting mujahedin rebels during the Soviet Invasion – which left Kabul with little say in how things unfolded thereabouts. Finally, many Afghans may have seen America as a strategic adversary; while it was always willing to help allies against insurgents and terrorists alike, it wasn’t always inclined to share resources or airspace with other countries friendly towards Kabul (e.g., Pakistan).
In 1984, the Florida Air National Guard activated a unit to provide gift history for the then-new Tampa International Airport. The unit was redesignated as the 9th Airlift Wing in 1997 and again in 2006 when it became part of the Florida Air National Guard's 1st Tactical Fighter Wing.

As a result of this hurricane crisis, much progress has been made since then on repairing infrastructure and improving living conditions for residents in Tampa.
