The Tampa Air National Guard is one of the most active air forces in the United States. Its members serve at home and abroad, and it has a rich history dating back to World War II. The organization was formed on December 10, 1942, as the Florida Air National Guard. It initially consisted of 19 planes and 2 pilots. In 1946, it was upgraded to an Army Reserve unit with 100 planes and 4 pilots. On July 1, 1949, the Florida Air National Guard became an independent military force under the command of Major General James L. Westmoreland Jr., Commander-in-Chief of the United States Army Forces Europe Command (USAFE). The first major action taken by the Tampa Air National Guard came in May 1950 when it supported Operation Neptune's Spear –a relief effort during the Korean War –with its aircraft and personnel. The air wing played a significant role in ensuring that hostilities ended successfully. subsequent missions included providinglift support to troops fighting in Vietnam; providing transportation for war veterans returning from combat; being an integral part of Operation Desert Storm; and participating in numerous humanitarian efforts over the years. A total of 527 members have served with TampaAirNationalGuard since it was activated as an independent military force on July 1, 1949
