The Tampa Bay area has a long and proud military history dating back to World War II. The Tampa Army National Guard's 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team is one of the oldest units in the Florida National Guard, formed in 1942. The brigade was later redesignated as the 3rd Infantry Division in 1994. As America entered World War II, the Tampa Army National Guard was mobilized and organized into three brigades: 1st Brigade, 2nd Brigade, and 3rd Brigade Combat Team. Each brigade had four battalions: A Company (Athletic), B Company (Brigade HQ & Service Battalion), C Company (Infantryimental Light Infantry Regiment No.9), and D Company (Artillery). The division also activated two rifle companies each of artillery regiment #10 and #11. The divisional headquarters were located at Camp Blanding on Clearwater Harbor until it relocated to Fort Myers in October 1942 under then-Army Chief of Staff General George S Patton Jr.. Thereafter, Headquarters for the Third Infantry Division moved to Fort Walton Beach from March 1944 to May 1945 concurrently with nearby Marine Corps Air Station Hollywood which became an active fighter airfield during World War II. Inactivated inactivation relieved from duty on 1 July 1945 when all combat troops were committed to conclude hostilities against Japan following its surrender at Hiroshima. At that time Ft Walton Beach became an inactive Naval Base with personnel demobilized on 15 August 1945 their equipment sold or leased off or disposed of as surplus materiel. The Tampa Bay Division of the United States Army has a rich history dating back to World War I. The division was formed in 1917 from the remnants of the Florida Brigade, which had been disbanded after the war. The brigade was initially stationed in Tampa, and then moved to St Petersburg. In 1919, it was combined with the Alabama Brigade and renamed the Tampa-St Petersburg Brigade. In 1926, it became part of III Corps and was renamed 1st Infantry Division. It fought in World War II as part of II Corps and served in Normandy and Germany. After the war, it returned to its original name before being reassigned to VII Corps in 1951. It saw action in Korea and Vietnam before being disbanded in 1972.
