Tampa, Florida is an American city located in the Tampa Bay area of central Florida. The population was 1,571,844 as of the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Hillsborough County and one of the most populous cities in Florida. The City of Tampa was founded on December 12, 1835 by Captain John Stroud and Major James Wilkinson. The name "Tampa" comes from a Seminole word meaning "safe haven." The economy of Tampa is based mainly on manufacturing and services. Manufacturing includes construction materials such as asphalt and bricks, electronic equipment, home builders and furniture manufacturers, among others. Services include retail trade (finance, real estate, law enforcement), transportation (a major airport with over 100 commercial passenger airlines serving it), professional services (administrative law judgeship positions for federal court districts including Pinellas County) and tourism. Tampa, Florida is a city in the U.S. state of Florida and the county seat of Hillsborough County. The population was 547,827 at the 2010 census, making it the most populous city in Tampa Bay and its suburbs. Tampa is considered to be an important center for business and technology services, especially as headquarters for major corporations such as Google and Facebook. The area now known as downtown Tampa was first settled by Native American peoples before being established by Spanish colonists in 1692 as part of the exploration and colonization of North America. In 1836, Tampa became a port on Tampa Bay under the name St Petersburg by acting governor George Pickens after he purchased land from David Wilcox for $5 million dollars. The city grew rapidly during the 19th century due to shipping and manufacturing interests that moved into its neighborhoods: shipbuilding companies such as Gulf Steam Navigation Company (Gulfstream Line) built bridges over Hillsborough River, forming what is now downtown; printing firms like Eubank Paper Manufacturing Company developed Newspapers serving areas including eastern Hillsborough County; meatpacking plants like JBS Meatpacking Company produced pork products until 1975; automobile manufacturing companies like Dodge & Jeep manufactured cars in immense quantities until the early 21st century; and oil refineries like Sunoco Logistics created large amounts of asphalt and other industrial products until they were shut down or re-purposed as housing developments around Downtown Tampa between 2001-2006. After World War II, growth slowed throughout most of South Florida due to high levels of military spending which limited job opportunities throughout much of south Florida. However, followingthe end of World War II there began an accelerated growth process fueled by both suburban migration (large numbers of people moving into development near Interstate 495) as well as new economic opportunities that emerged from deregulation in many industries following several decades during which local governments had been unable or unwilling to provide basic services such as funding infrastructure needed for rapid postwar expansion
Tampa was founded on a small island in the Tampa Bay area by colonists in 1795. The town quickly grew and became an important commercial and military center during the Seminole Wars. In 1814, after Florida was ceded to the United States, Tampa became a key naval base and then served as a major depot for American goods arriving from the Caribbean Sea. After the Civil War, Tampa continued to be an important manufacturing center with heavy industry such as shipbuilding, cotton mills, and sugar cane plantations. In 1907, after several years of planning by city leaders, Tampa's first street grid was laid out. The city gradually expanded through annexation of neighboring towns until it reached its current size today.
