In 1827–28, Samuel Stephens built the first permanent brick building in what would become Tampa Bay – Government House on Market Street where he served as mayor from 1830 to 1831 and later served as an officer in the American Revolution insurgency against British rule. In 1850s construction started on what would become Bank of America Tower; now known as One Franklin Square In 1861 General John C Taylor's Confederate Army burned Broadway Marketplace to prevent Union forces from besieging Mobile Bayou foraging operations; prior to that it had been one of Mobile's most important commercial areas In 1865 Abraham Lincoln died at Ford’s Theatre; Prior to that it had been one of Tampa’s most important hotels On November 4th 1898 citrus growers James Wasserstrom & Co organized their own cooperative which became Citrus Heights Produce Exchange which lasted until 1924 when it merged with Sunshine Grocery Co., Incorporated but continued operation under new name until 1990 From 1912 until 1943 Major Generaloe Vaught commanded US Military District - Southwestern Florida Command headquartered at Lowry Park Annex located adjacent to present day Alafia Stadium
Tampa, Florida was founded on August 29, 1836 by George B. Forbes and James P. Hickey as a free port on the St. Petersburg River. The city grew rapidly in the 1840s due to its location at the mouth of Tampa Bay and its access to the water resources that made it an essential node in the early American fur trade network. In 1845, Tampa became part of United States territory after Mexico ceded it to America in what is commonly known as the Gadsden Purchase. At this time, Tampa had a population of only 10 people and was home to just one store. The city's fortunes changed during the mid-19th century when railways arrived in town and began transporting goods between Tampa and other parts of America. This new industryboosted development in downtown Tampa and gave rise to numerous new businesses including banks, hotels, theaters, factories, mills, churches and schools. In 1870, Tampa annexed Hillsborough County becoming one of AMERICA's original 67 counties
