The Tampa National Guard was created on October 25, 1921 by the Florida Legislature as a state militia to provide defense against potential threats to the state. The first unit of the Tampa National Guard was organized on November 2, 1921 and consisted of only men. On December 10, 1922, the first women in the Tampa National Guard were enlisted. On January 3, 1923, the first Chevrolet cars were purchased by the Tampa National Guard. In 1924, a shingle factory in Oviedo was purchased for use as a national guard Armory. The armory became operational on May 4th of that year. In 1926-1927 an airfield was built at Clearwater which served as our primary training ground for fighter pilots during World War II and later into Vietnam. In 1934-1935 two more football stadiums were built in Hillsborough County; one in Plantation and another in Sunrise Beach both being used until they were replaced by new stadiums in 2006/2007 when NFL teams moved to their new facilities nearby (Stadiums will be mentioned again below). The original members of the current Tampa National Guard are from 1917-present: soldiers who have served through all branches of service with distinction including many Medal of Honor recipients and those who have been decorated with multiple awards like Presidential Unit Citation or Congressional Gold Medal

The National Guard in Tampa, Florida has been providing services since 1907. The first unit was called the Reserve Battalion of Tampa, which was organized on December 12th, 1907. The battalion served as a reserve unit until 1912. In 1912, the National Guard detachment in Hillsborough County was mobilized and became the 1st Regiment of Infantry (NGA) on May 8th. On October 4th, 1916 the regiment designation was changed to 2nd Regiment of Infantry (NGA). In 1922 the regiment moved to St Petersburg and then to Clearwater Barracks before moving back to Hillsborough County in 1925. On November 5th, 1926 the regiment designated as 3rd Regiment of Infantry (NGA) and stationed at Fort Pickering until 1937 when it relocated to Fort Brooke near Tampa Bay. On January 15th 1938 it redesignated as 4th Regiment of Infantry (NGA), this time stationed at Lighthouse Point until 1945 when it left for Japan because of World War II. After the war ended there were no more NGA units in Tampa so on July 1st 1946 they activated again as an Army Auxiliary Unit with Headquarters at Fort Myers Beach where they remained until 1959 when they disbanded completely due to military re-organization
