The Tarpon Springs Air Force Base was founded on December 15, 1941 as the Florida Army Air Forces Station Tallahassee. It became an air force base in 1945 and was renamed Tarpon Springs Air Force Base on January 1, 1948. The base served as the home of the 366th Fighter Wing from 1951 to 1992. In 1993, it was redesignated Joint Reserve Base McChord Field and serves as a training center for the Alaska National Guard units stationed at Joint Reserve Base McGrath Field in Anchorage, Alaska. Airfield operations have been conducted by both military and civilian wings since 1947. The Military Wing is responsible for providing mission capable flying assets to support DoD missions while also providing environmental research services to various agencies across the state of Florida. The Civilian Wing provides administrative and operational support to Combined Arms Services installations throughout Florida. The current management team at Tarpon Springs AFB includes Colonel Jeffrey J. Vowell (Ret.), Superintendent Marcia Ahern (Ret.) and Commander David Witherspoon Jr., USAF (ret). As part of its commitment to continuous improvement, Headquarters-1TARPS has created a new command post called Ground Control; this new command will manage all aspects of airspace security including weather permitting operations through Tactical Air Command's 13th Flying Training Squadron (13FTS) located at Homestead AFB near Miami Lakes Airport As part of its continuing commitment towards diversity within the United States Armed Forces, Headquarters-1TARPS has implemented a policy designed to create opportunities for service members from all backgrounds who may wish to pursue an aviation career or continue their education after leaving active duty service
