Tarpon Springs, Florida is a sleepy town in Polk County, Florida. It lies on the eastern coast of the state and is bordered by Lake Okeechobee to the northwest, Martin County to the northeast, and St. Johns County to the southeast. The population was 5,922 at the 2010 census. The community was named for Captain John Tarpon who built a sawmill here in 1835. In 1855, Confederate soldier George Tucker moved his family from Georgia to central Florida and proposed that they set up a farm here near present-day Tarpon Springs. After some deliberation, they decided against it and moved back east again in 1857. A post office called Tarpon Springs was established in 1871, but no one ever lived there full-time. In 1888, Jardine Hetherington opened her hotel here which became known as “The White House” after she bought it from its previous owner, General William Tecumseh Sherman (1814-1902). The first grocery store opened in 1912 followed by a barber shop in 1926. By 1933 there were six businesses open including two churches and four schools that accommodated more than 1,000 students per grade level during school terms; most of these buildings still stand today! Many people who live in Tarpon Springs forget that it once had an active military garrison: Camp Polk was located on U S Civil War veteran James Witherspoon's land just east of town between Old Fort Worth Road and Ponce de Leon Boulevard until May 1980 when it was closed down due to budget cuts within DoD/Navy World Headquarters Tampa Bay area! This poignant reminder of our past comes as no surprise given that Camp Polk has been completely disassembled since then...
In 1846, when Florida was acquired by the United States, the Peninsular Apalachicola Company was organized to develop this area. The company had been founded in 1835 by John Haines and other investors. In 1847, it built a fort on what is now Pensacola Beach. By 1850, the company had developed some 640 acres of land east of the St Johns River near present-day Tarpon Springs. The site became known as "The Fort." In 1855, a group of men led by Captain James Kenedy built a house on what is now Fountain Place in Tarpon Springs and named it Kenedy's Fort. In 1861, the United States Army took over control of Florida from Spain and beganFort Moultrie east of Tampa Bay. On April 12, 1861, General Robert Ewell ordered his army to attackKenedy's Fort and retreated after suffering heavy losses. A day later, Major General Winfield Scott arrived atKenedy's Fort with an army and drove Ewell's forces out of Florida for good.
