The Tarpon Springs, Florida Army National Guard has a rich and colorful history dating back to the early 1900s. The unit was organized on April 12, 1903 as the 1st Regiment of Infantry Florida Volunteer Militia. It was redesignated as the 9th Regiment of Infantry on July 8, 1918 and reorganized on October 15, 1917 as the 3rd Battalion Florida Infantry. On November 11, 1942 it was redesignated as the 5th Battalion Florida Infantry and reorganized on December 10, 1942 as the 4th Battalion Florida Infantry. On July 1, 1944 it was redesignated as the 3rd Regiment/5th Brigade (Mechanized) Florida Army National Guard. It became an infantry regiment again on October 15, 1959 when it merged with the 2nd Battalion/1st Brigade (Airborne) US Air Force at Maxwell AFB Alabama to formthe 3rd Brigade/2nd Air Force at Maxwell AFB Alabama. The brigade disbanded in 1970 but its colors still fly around Tarpon Springs today!
Tarpon Springs is a small town located in central Florida. The population was 3,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tallahassee-Westville–Emmittsboro, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Tarpon Springs was J.B. French in 1892 and the town was platted on November 10, 1893 by Elisha Daniel Horton. The first post office was established in 1895 and the first store was built on Main Street. The name “Tarpon” came from a manatee that sometimes Legal Bay would catch and sell to tourists as if it were a fish market stall. In 1912, Tarpon Springs became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and six trustees who governed with the advice of a board of directors which included prominent citizens such as J.D. Payne and Wm Halsey Beardsley In 1932, Tarpon Springs merged with Westville to form the Tallahassee-Westville-Emmittsboro Metropolitan Statistical Area which had a population of over 150,000 people when it formed . On December 4th, 1936, all municipalities within the metropolitan area were combined into one entity known as "The City" under then Mayor Harry Capps On January 1st 2009 City Council passed Resolution No 7261 authorizing annexation by Tallahassee Township for an estimated cost of $2 million dollars According to 2008 Census data there are now over 50 businesses total including 12 restaurants serving up to 200 guests eachserving breakfast lunch dinner nightlyand more than 30 services catering to various needs such as pet sitting , home health care , tree service etc ..There are also numerous apartments available for occupancy including single family detached homes both new construction condossingle family attached homes rentals multiple bedroom units multi story structuresThis growth has come about because of several factors such as new job creation due to businesses opening up throughout Central Florida due to increased competition from outside sources jobs being shipped out east after careful analysis of demand by our city staff we have been able to keep prices down while still providing quality amenities for our residents
