It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford County,Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. Tarpon Springs is located on Interstate 441 and provides access to Walt Disney World and other nearby attractions. The town began as a station on the Florida Central Railway in 1884. In 1907, Tarpon Springs became the site of the first general store in Sanford County when Elisha Cuthbert opened The General Store at Fourth Street and Page Avenue. The store continued to be open until it closed in 1951 due to competition from Walmart. In 1927, Drury Lumber Company built an sawmill on Big Creek north of town; this mill continues to operate today as Chiappa Sawmills Incorporated. From 1927 until 1966, Tarpon Springs was home to Citrus Bowl Stadium which served as both a football and track stadium for high school football and baseball teams from east Orlando (then Orange County) and Kissimmee (then Osceola County). In response to steady growth in population and commercial interests within town limits over time, voters passed an ordinance amending zoning code regulations in 1959 calling for some limited development within city limits while prohibiting more than two buildings per block nor more than four stories tall without special permits from city staff or management; these restrictions remain in place today. Development has since been sporadic at best with few new structures erected after 1990 aside from a single apartment building completed around 2007 just outside of downtown Tarpon Springs proper gazebo area complete with private lawn maintenance service that overlooks I-4 & SR 436
