The Tarpon Springs Coast Guard Station has been providing law enforcement, emergency medical service and tourism support to the community since 1915. The station is also home to the Museum of American Maritime History, which tells the story of America's maritime history from pioneer days through today's maritime industry. In 1916, Congress authorized the creation of a coast guard station in Tarpon Springs as part of legislation designed to improve safety on the Florida Keys. The first Coast Guard detachment arrived at the station on December 5, 1916. At that time, it was known as Station No. 1. In 1968, when Station No. 2 was demolished and replaced by Station Nos. 3 and 4, the name of the new station was changed to Coast Guard Station Tarpon Springs – hereafter shortened to Coast Guard Station Tarpon Springs – in commemoration of its role in guarding our coastline and promoting coastal tourism in our community. Today, Auxiliary Squadron Fourteen (Auxiliary) provides law enforcement services for citizens who use or visit our beaches; emergency medical services for those who need help after an accident or illness;and visitor education programs for tourists interested in learning about our area's history and culture.

The Coast Guard Museum is a museum located in Tarpon Springs, Florida. The museum was founded in 1951 and is the first of its kind on the Gulf coast of Florida. It contains artifacts from both local and federal law enforcement agencies.
Tarpon Springs is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,934 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Tarpon Springs is known for its sailing and fishing communities, as well as its white picket fence neighborhoods. The first Europeans to visit Tarpon Springs were members of the Spanish galleons San Felipe and Santiago on October 12, 1565. They sailed northwestward from Cuba and encountered a group of islands off the coast of Florida which they named "Isla de los Búfalos" after one of their ships - San Felipe's captain noticed there were buck Tickling Sparrows on these islands so he christened them "Isla de las Brisas" (Island of the Bees). The name was applied to other nearby islands until 1868 when Colonel John Covington purchased land near present day Tarpon Springs from Chief Osceola for $1,200. He built a fortification called Fort Covington on what is now State Road 237 about two miles east of town limits. The site became known as Covington Heights because it commanded a VIEW OF THE WATERFRONT AND ITS PRODUCTS FROM A HIGH POINT IN THE AREA- an ideal place to watch shipping pass by or take aim at Fishing Catcher Boats coming into or leaving the harbor during boat races in early summertime. In 1891 Colonel Covington donated land south of townlimits to establish Tarpon Springs Naval Air Station (now Naval Air Station Jacksonville) with four runways and six aircraft hangars – making it one of America's largest naval air stations during World War II. In 1917 Drury organized an agricultural society here which became Gainesville Agricultural Society Incorporated in 1924; soon afterwards Gainesville incorporated as City Of Tarpon Springs under provisions contributed by Drury et al., giving city government power over all matters within city limits subject only to Town Meeting except taxation and planning ordinances passed by Mayor Andrus &c etcetera without his written consent thereby enabling him more actively to control affairs within extreme limits then ever before accomplished by any municipality in this country... On July 3rd 1915 JF Dorman died intestate aged 79 years @ 7:30pm having owned & operated Dorman’s Barbecue restaurant since 1912 located across from High School where he had served many high school students including myself during their lunch period back when I also ate there frequently with my buddies Bud Larsen & Al Smith (both future mayors) On December 6th 1916 his widow Mrs Dorman moved her restaurant 2 doors west from Dorman’s onto Main Street & resumed operation as “Dorman’s Place” continuing until 1948 when both buildings were razed due To Hurricane makeover plans which included replacement frontage roads along US highway 95 Business Airport Rd that took away much needed parking spaces lot next door across street providing today's business line up opposite former restaurant building Today most people know about Tarpon Springs through residents who live outside Jacksonville who bring attention to it every time something noteworthy happens in that area such as hurricanes Irma or Harvey

The city was named after Captain Tarpon's flagship, the USS Pompano which sunk off the coast of South Florida in 1851. After hurricanes Andrew and Irma destroyed much of downtown Tarpon Springs in September 2017, residents started a GoFundMe page to help rebuild their town. In November 2017, Mayor Bob Scherer announced that the city would be donating $250K to local organizations working to rebuild Hurricane Irma-damaged neighborhoods across South Florida.
