Tarpon Springs, Florida is a small town located in Alachua County,Florida. It was founded by John Wesley McCoy in 1853 and named for theTarpsi Dune at Tarpon Springs, Georgia. The name came from the Spanish word "tarpon," meaning “to collect fallen fruit” or “a large reed used as an cover for cooking.” In 1854, McCoy began to sell baskets of wild huckleberries from his porch. By 1858, he had built a store on State Road 508 and renamed it Tarpon Springs Store and Post Office. In 1865, McCoy married Anna Lillie Swope. They raised six children there until Anna died in 1903. The McCoy home still stands today and is currently used as a museum by the Tarpon Springs Historical Society
