In 1836, General James Wilkinson built a fence around what is now Tarpon Springs to protect his plantations from Seminole Indian raids. The town's first post office was established in 1847. A cotton gin and mill were built near present day State Road 71 in 1869. The Tarpon Springs seat of government was moved to its current location in 1907 after being destroyed by a fire that burned down Wilkinson's plantation buildings on Bayou Teche. Tarpon Springs is a small town located in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Miami metropolitan area. Tarpon Springs was founded by George Washington White and his brother-in-law Job Smith in 1838. The first post office in Tarpon Springs was established in 1839. In 1925, Tarpon Springs became an incorporated city. The town hall is one of the few remaining structures from when Tarpon Springs was founded as a small community of about fifty people in 1838. George Washington White and Job Smith were the founders of Tarpon Springs and are buried there among other early settlers including John Shelby who also founded Clearwater and St Petersburg on what is now Clearwater Beach Boulevard just east of downtown Tarpon Springs. The water treatment plant built in 1924 NoDa Enterprises Inc., later renamed Monsanto Company, remains one of Tarpon Springs' most significant landmarks and still offers potable water to residents today after many years of operation as a private business run by descendants of original founders George Washington White and Job Smith that remain important to the town today despite being sold to Monsanto Company two decades ago.
