Tarpon Springs is a city located in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 25,514 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area and is included in the Jacksonville–St Petersburg–Boca Raton Combined Statistical Area. Tarpon Springs was founded by Captain John Tarpon in 1827 as a trading post on the St Johns River. By 1830, Tarpon had become an important cotton center due to its location between Pensacola and Mobile Bay. In 1834, General Andrew Jackson named it after Major James Tarpon who had been with him during his march from New Orleans to Fort Jackson in South Carolina. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic position along US Route 35 south of Interstate 95 and its access to navigable rivers and bayous. In 1951, Tarpons Springs became a city when it annexed neighboring Pompano Beach. The city's growth continued through the late 20th century while Pompano Beach increased in popularity as a retirement community and beachside resort town. However, annexation of other communities by the city led to tension over development rights; this culminated in a 1976 referendum which denied annexation to South Miami based on allegations that Tarpons Spring would have caused large numbers of jobs and tax revenues for Miami City officials rather than for the citizens of adjoining townships who were much poorer than those living within city limits. In 2001, voters passed a resolution creating an urban redevelopment authority which began developing plans for what would become TARPON SPRINGS – an inclusive community focused on economic development, job training and public services including libraries, recreation centers and parks – despite objections from some residents who felt they were being priced out of their own neighborhoods by rapid growth within neighbouring cities such as Miami-Dade County . The authority completed construction of several initial projects – such as new streetscapes around Town Square – before announcing its final plan for development which called for 375 acres (143 hectares) of land east of I-95 (the former Pottersville Road site) to be rezoned into mixed-use athletic fields with commercial buildings facing northward towards downtown Jacksonville; 45 acres (21 hectares) west of I-95 (the former Pinehurst Road site) would be developed into apartments; 36 acres (16 hectares) north east of I-95 would be used for open space; while 4 acres (2 hectares) southwest corner of I-95/I-395 would serve as an airport park
