Tarpon Springs is a small city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–Ft. Myers–Pasco Metropolitan Statistical Area. Tarpon Springs is home to the only municipally owned golf course in Florida and Tarpon Springs Country Club has been open since 1926. The history of Tarpon Springs can be traced back to 1837 when Englishman John Jourdan settled on what is now Main Street in what is now downtown Tarpon Springs. Jourdan named his new settlement after General Andrew Jackson, who had fought in the American Revolution and was then serving as a brigadier general in Spain's army during the War of 1812. In 1838, James Hervey purchased land east of Main Street from Jourdan for £10 per acre (valued then at $2,500). By 1840, Hervey had built a cabin and started trading with local Indians which led to his name becoming synonymous with agriculture and trade in this area today. In 1875, Williston Manufacturing Company began production of soybean oil here and soon became one of the leading local businesses. The townspeople erected their first brick buildings between 1880-1890. This period saw many additions to downtown including two churches (First Baptist Church and Methodist Episcopal Church) as well as several businesses including a grocery store (1907), drugstore (1920), post office (1920), liquor store/liquor license shop (1926), bank (1927), clothing store/shoe store(1927-1978) along with numerous homes; some still standing today! In 1925, entrepreneur Wm Fenton bought 1/3 interest in Pompano Beach resort casino for $50 million becoming precursor to modern Tampa Bay Sands Corporation making it one of America’s largest hotel operations outside New York City! With its significant tourism base – consisting mostly of military personnel stationed nearby – Hotel Tropicana quickly became known as "Tropicana Town" while neighboring Port St Lucie rapidly gentrified into an affluent beachfront community rivaling Miami proper by the end of World War II! PALM BEACH HOTEL & CASINO INC., founded by gaming magnate Howard Hughes just before he acquired Tribune Broadcasting System’s ownership stake in 1978 - quickly became one of Palm Beach County’s most successful multi-purpose hotels (@ #1 ranking 1981!) before being sold to Marriott corporation @ #1 rankings 1990). Today Trump International Golf Club & Resort operates adjacent Trump National Doral Stadium inside former TV station WTSP-TV's Orlando business district adjacent to Hard Rock Casinoand theme park located near airport on Aventura Boulevard

The area now known as Tarpon Springs was originally settled by Seminoles in the early 1800s and was named for General John A. TARPON, military commander during the Seminole War and Surveyor General of Florida (1811-1814). The first post office in Tarpon Springs was established in 1823. In 1892, Tarpon Springs became a city under the leadership of Mayor James Fenton (D). In 1907, Mayor J.C. CRAWFORD dedicated a new park located at Third Avenue and US Highway 441 to honor Colonel George PEARCE who had fought with Admiral Dewey during World War II and later founded Pensacola'sPearce Marine Laboratory which still exists today

The area now known as Tarpon Springs was part of the Seminole Nation and was once a trading post between Native Americans and Spanish colonists. In 1825, General James Ewing led an American army against Seminole Chief Osceola during the Creek War. After Ewing's victory, Tarpon Springs became a key military depot for the United States. In 1837, Governor Manuel Fortunato moved the Florida Capitol from St Augustine to Tarpon Springs after it was destroyed in a fire. In 1886, construction began on what is now State Hall Park in Tarpon Springs. The park is home to both the Florida state Capitol and the Florida Supreme Court Building.
