The Tarpon Springs Naval Air Station was established in 1925 as a naval air station on the east bank of the St. Johns River in Tarpon Springs, Florida. The airfield served as a training ground for aviators and fighter pilots during World War II. After the war, the military transitioned to an aviation-only institution and in 1949 it became part of the United States Navy's Jacksonville Naval Air Station. In 1957, NAS Jacksonville was transferred to NAS Tampa Bay and NAS Miami followed in 1959. In 1969, NAS Miami was redesignated USS Enterprise (CVN-7) after Rear Admiral John W. "Swede" Pershing III who had been Commodore of Carrier Strike Group 7 at NAS Miami from 1944 until his death in 1966. The Enterprise class aircraft carriers were among the first U.S. warships with advanced anti-ship missiles capability which allowed them to conductOperation Neptune Spear against North Vietnam during the Vietnam War era. On 1 October 1990, USS Enterprise (CVN-7) collided with USS John F Kennedy (CVN-8) off Cape Canaveral,Florida while conducting Operation Desert Storm; both ships were destroyed by fire and flooding caused by extensive damage to their superstructure involving over 100 casualties including Commodore Pershing himself.{{UDI}} The collision killed all 11 crewmembers on Enterprise while JFK lost 5 crew members including Captain James Eagan and First Lieutenant William Halsey.

Tarpon Springs is a small town in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,907 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gainesville–Lakeland–Aventura Combined Statistical Area.
