Tarpon Springs is a city in southwestern Florida, United States. The population was 41,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ferry Pass–Delaware metropolitan area. Tarpon Springs is located on Pensacola Bay and features a freshwater bay named after it, Tarpon Bay. The first written mention of what is now Tarpon Springs was in 1788 when Spanish traders noted an "impenetrable barrier" to their voyage from Galveston Island to Mobile Bay. In 1836, General Andrew Jackson visited Tarpon Springs while campaigning for president and ordered Major John Liddell to explore the bay that he called "the most perfect piece of water I ever saw." In 1853, J.P. Morgan bought land on the north side of Pensacola Bay and began construction on his cotton plantation known as Gulf Coast Plantations which would later become Morgan-owned Alabama National Bank. On August 10, 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell landed his army at Fort Pickens in order to attack Union forces advancing towards Jacksonville Landing on the Mobile Rivera battle that would come to be known as Battle of Gaines' Mill. After repeated Confederate assaults failed to achieve success, Ewell abandoned his location and retreated back into Georgia before eventually surrendering at Appomattox Court House Without giving any significant information about his forces or operations other than they had been destroyed by Union troops under George Meade days earlier during what became known as the Battle of Drew's Bridge. In 1865 following Reconstruction efforts led by President Abraham Lincoln, Tarpon Springs was made a town under state jurisdiction with elected officials responsible for public services such as law enforcement and streetlights while white citizens were forbidden from living within one mile (1 kilometer) of any black person or woman except those owning property directly subject to their control or through leaseholds leased from white landlords or tenants thereof who could vote in municipal elections; this provision continued until 1978 when it was repealed due to progress made by both races since then without formal repeal happening however all black residents were re-enfranchised effective January 1st 1979 through state legislation approved that day creating Municipal Boroughs with City Council members appointed by Mayor with veto power over ordinances not related either directly or indirectly to race/ethnicity although there are some exceptions where special committees are created specifically for this purpose A racial segregation ordinance passed by city council in 1967 prohibited unmarried white women from living together in single occupancy dwellings with unmarried black men but allowed married white women and unmarried black men who had resided together continuously since before emancipation regardless of gender status; this policy also applied to churches which were considered private residences owned equally by both races although church properties are still rented out today primarily for vacation rentals rather than use as housing ]. The origins of small batch coffee can be traced back to the early 1800s when Dutch settlers in what is now Texas were starting to make their own espresso drinks from raw, untreated cocoa beans. These pioneers soon realized that they could make a better cup of espresso with a smaller amount of caffeine than if they took most of their beans from larger roasters. They started using this method to brew themselves some Java Mornings, Mocha Latte's and other specialty beverages. In 1853, American entrepreneur James Fenton purchased a plantation in Louisiana and began growing large quantities ofcoffee (beans were then grown under irrigation). Fenton's successful business model allowed him to buy more and more acres of land, which he used for his coffee plantations. He developed an elaborate system where he would place his bean sacks out near the sun in order to dry them quickly so that he could produce high quality cups of espresso without having any waste left over. By 1888, Fenton had become one of the largest tea importers in America and his company became known as The Roaster Company. In 1898, these same businessmen founded what is now Starbucks Coffee Corporation after purchasing its parent company Maxwell House Coffee Co., Ltd.. At first Starbucks served only Dutch-made café drinks like Java Mornings and Mochas; however, over time they opened up shop across all fifty U.S states including Alaska and Puerto Rico! When Sprague died in 1836, his son took over the business and renamed it Sprague's wharf after himself. Tarpon Springs became an important regional center during the Gilded Age because of its location at the mouth of the St Johns River and its access to both salt water and fresh water resources. In 1907, Tarpon Springs was incorporated as a municipality. The original courthouse was built in 1909 on Main Street between Alabama Avenue and Federal Highway. The courthouse burned down in 1915 but was replaced by a new courthouse that still stands today on US-4 east of downtown Tarpon Springs. In 1941, World War II started when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and beganWWII with aerial bombings raids against America from Oahu Hawaii . Due to this attack, many people fled or were forced out of their homes in coastal Florida during WWII. Most notably, Tarpon Springs experienced significant destruction due to firebombing raids which destroyed most buildings within city limits on December 15th - January 2nd 1942 . That same year also saw the first professional fishing tournament ever held in Florida when sixty teams from fourteen states competed at Fort Myers Beach Municipal Pier . The 1945 Hurricane season devastated much of southeasternFlorida including portions ofTarponSprings Municipality with total damage amountingto $14 million dollars On October 28th 1945 , a category 5 hurricane named Ophelia made landfall near Tampa Bay Florida causing extensive damage alongwith more than 150 deaths including 50% loss of life among men age 60 or older
The town of Tarpon Springs, Florida was founded in 1884 by Colonel John L. Costigan and his wife, Sarah. The town was originally named Springdale until a local group lobbied for the name change to Tarpon Springs after seeing a large tarpon in the nearby bay. The first post office was established in 1885 and the first store opened in 1886. By 1890, there were 5 businesses in the town and it had a population of only 50 people. In 1914, the first telephone line was installed in Tarpon Springs and by 1922, there were 10 phone companies operating in Tarpon Springs. During World War II, Tarpon Springs served as an airfield for the United States military during both the Battle of Okinawa and Operation Cartwheel which aimed to capture Japanese forces on island known as Iwo Jima. In 1969, Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of central Florida including portions of Tarpon Springs including most of its business districts; however, due to its proximity to Miami Beach and other parts of South Florida that suffered extensive damage from Hurricane Andrew,Tarpon Springs quickly rebuilt and became one of the most robust communities back into existence afterHurricane Andrew hit. With its new economy booming thanks to tourism related businesses such as resorts (such as then-new Oceanfront Resort), downtown redevelopment occurred throughout much of 2007 with many new stores being built along Main Street during that time frame; however some older businesses have slowly been renovated or replaced over time such as Safeway which reopened their doors nearly 20 years after it closed down following Superstorm Sandy’s devastating wrath just south of town near BP gas station/restaurant complex). Additionally several golf courses have also been redeveloped into upscale hotels or condo developments located within walking distance from downtown TARPON SPRINGS while still maintained primarily for residential use with very few visitors ever visiting these courses outside peak season due mainly to hurricane induced closures (e.g., Pinehurst Golf Course which remained open through Irma but has since been completely rebuilt following heavy rains associated with that storm).
