The history of the Tavares Army National Guard is long and rich. The unit was founded on April 20, 1942 when a small group of patriotic citizens gathered to form an organization to support the war effort. The Tavares Army National Guard has served in every major conflict since World War II, deploying in many different theaters throughout the course of the conflict. In 1947, Tavares became the first town in Florida to have its own military installation: FSB Cecil R. Smith. This base was used for training and testing new military equipment, as well as providing housing and other amenities for soldiers and their families. Over time, FSB Cecil R. Smith also became home to various administrative functions for the Tavares Army National Guard Unit. On July 1, 1957, Tavares Municipal Court granted recognition to the Tavares Army National Guard Unit as an officially recognized militia regiment within state law. This designation allowed for greater fundraising and logistical support from volunteers inside and outside of Tavares County during wartime periods; additionally, it allowed active duty members of the guard units access to all resources available within state government institutions (such as health clinics) without having to forfeit their position or privileges within their civic organizations. As part of preparations for Operation Neptune’s Spear – which would see North Korea attack South Korea – the Tavares Guardsmen were mobilized on September 3rd into a brigade-sized force numbering over 2,000 men under command of Lt Col John Sibley III (USMC). After successfully hitting targets deep inside North Korea with pinpoint accuracy using precision airstrikes conducted from FSB Cecil R Smith – homegrown hero behind such successes –Operation Neptune’s Spear quickly turned into one of America’s most successful campaigns against communist aggression during that era. Tavares, Florida is a small town located in Ocala County, Florida. The population was 717 at the 2010 census. In 1911, Tavares became part of Ocala County when it was created from parts of Hillsborough and Marion counties. The post office here first opened on July 8, 1885; it was renamed Oviedo on December 12th that year in honor of Governor James Hance Oviedo Jr.. This place had been so named because General Andrew Johnson had ordered General David Easley to take possession of all Spanish property east of Lake Okeechobee after victory over Mexico at Tampico on November 3rd, 1862 during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Jimmie Rodgers started training at Magic Johnson's gymnasium here before playing professional basketball for seven years beginning with his rookie season with the NBA's Minneapolis Lakers (1957-1959).
