The current incarnation of Tavares Town began taking shape during this period with many homes being built near State Road 441 about 10 miles east of downtown on land once used for agriculture; however it wasn’t until 1978 when developer Lew Jenkins purchased extensive acres adjacent to US Highway 301B making available more than 2 million square feet ideal for retail development including several anchor stores such as Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney & Co., Gartner Incorporated (later Thomson Microwave), Reitman's Sporting Goods & More before developing it into what we now know as “Tavaris Park Mall” with over 100 storespace across five levels representing nearly every type imaginable including departmental store staples like Macy's Department Stores Incorporated(Macy's Herald Square), JCPenney &Co.(Jasper Place), Kress Martincorp SA(KressMart)and Sears Holding Corporation.(Sears Tower). Additionally key anchor tenants during this phase included PGA TOUR Champions TOUR de France Golf Club(PGA TOUR Champions Tour de France Golf Club), Hooters Restaurants international Holdings Incorporated(Hooters Restaurants international plc.), Wet Seal company headquarters(Wet Seal company headquarters - later renamed Wrigley Field)and then Dillard's department store chain Headquarters moved out onto Route 441 midway through this period leaving behind a large open field with numerous parking garages available on site for future developments!
