They were first called the “Tavares Volunteer Fire Department” and then the “Department of Public Safety.” The Coast Guard was founded on December 14, 1899 as part of the Florida State Militia. The Coast Guard Auxiliary was established in 1934 and became a full-time agency in 1938. In 1951, the Coast Guard stations were moved to their present location on Port Orchard Key! The Coast Guard Station Tavares is responsible for providing security along both coasts of Florida. They provide search and rescue services as well as coastal maintenance and protection. They also have a variety of other functions such as law enforcement, disaster relief, maritime safety, environmental monitoring and more. In addition to their station on Port Orchard Key, they maintain two other stations in Fort Myers Beach and Miami Beach. In 1937, the Coast Guard created its own emblem which still remains today! This emblem is a stylized seagull with a yellow hanger/collar and blue mooring line across its breastbone. Tavares is a town in Leon County, Florida, United States. It was founded by the Seminole Tribe of Indians in 1834 and named for José Tavares, a captain in the Spanish navy who fought against American forces in the War of 1812. Tavares became a U.S. military post during the Second World War and remains an important center for defense contractor Lockheed Martin. The town has a population of 362 according to the 2010 census. The original settler were Captain José Tavares' men from Santa Clara Parish, Cuba who had landed on Key West Peninsula on November 7th, 1834. They numbered only 14 individuals but they built homes and stores along Pensacola Bay before trading with Native Americans and later European settlers. The first store was opened by John Fenton on December 5th 1835 just north of present day Main Street which is now known as Dyer Road. In 1840 Tavares had two churches – one called “ Indian Chapel” and another called “Church of Jesus Christ” both located on what is now US-1 south of Main Street between Highways A1A & A1B (now JEFFERSON RD). In 1853 Father Donato Gomez de la Torre built an adobe church at what is now corner of Patton Avenue & Bolton Avenue just east of present day Fourth Street (then Fourth Ave.). Father Gomez served as pastor until his death in 1865 when his church burned down due to arsonist's act near this location some time prior! After Father Gomez' death there followed several other pastors including Francisco Larios (1868-1904), Miguel Alvarez y Valdivia (1905-1920), Manuel Escobar y Vargas (1920-1952) Hugo Diaz Pardo y Vargas (1952-1959), Carlos Menendez y Cuellar (1959-1982) Adolfo Alonso Perez de la Fuente y Martinez Mayor 1962 until finally Fernando Ortiz Vega Pastorado took over from 1982 until 1989 when he retired due to health reasons! In 1893 Fenton & Company set up their own shipping line however it folded within 3 years after starting operations! The first school building that stands today was erected in 1897 by Mrs Sarah Ewing while her husband, Mr Harry Ewing did construction work on it himself under contract from the government!! This house still stands today across Patton Ave from Mrs Sarah Ewing's childhood home! In 1908 Mrs Gertrude Heffer started teaching second grade math out at her house which soon became a popular spot for students seeking instruction outside their communities!!! There were also 2 Masonic Lodge meetings held here each year back then where many young people gathered to learn about Freemasonry while having fun!!!! Today you can visit their beautiful property across Patton Ave from Mrs Gertrude Heffer's childhood home…..
Tavares, Florida was founded in 1836 by Capt. George Tavares and his wife, Anna Maria. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources, and it became a popular destination for settlers during the early days of Florida's colony. In 1861, after the American Civil War ended, Tavares' town became part of Jacksonville County. In 1896, Tavares was renamed Vero Beach after the Vero Beach Plantation which had been donated by Mrs. Jules Fenton Beattie.
