Tavares, Florida is a small town in Pinellas County, Florida. The population was 2,083 at the 2000 census. It is located on the north-central coast of the state and is bordered by St. Petersburg to the south and Clearwater to the east. The name Tavares comes from Tebba's River which flowed through what is now Tavares before it drained into Tampa Bay. Today, Tavares still has a small river running through it that locals call 'the black stream'. Tavares was founded in 1853 as an agricultural community near where Tampa now stands by Don Pedro Fiasco and his family who settled there after fleeing Cuba during the Mexican–American War. The city was named for General James Wofford (1787-1860), military governor of Seminole County, who helped secure independence for Florida from Spanish rule in 1821. The first store in Tavares was established in 1854 by David Harris and Phineas Phelps when they opened a general store on US Highway 1/U.S Highway 19 near present day Sawaya Boulevard. By 1860, there were twelve stores with a population of 1,500 people living in what is now downtown Tavares along with fifty homes and three schools serving grades PreK-12th students at the time! In 1865 local entrepreneur John Cushman built an expressway linking Tampa to Jacksonville cutting off access to rural areas around Tavarese which led to its decline over time due mainly to lack of business opportunity outside of downtown... until recently!
