Some of the earliest guns in Tavares, Florida were pistols. In 1892, a man named J.P. Dyer bought a pistol from a seller on Long Island and brought it to Tavares. He tried to sell it back to the seller, but the seller wouldn't let him because he was too old.
Tavares, Florida is a small town located in the Miami-Dade County area of South Florida. The population was 10,824 at the 2010 census. Tavares is home to the Tavares Naval Air Station and Estes Park Airport. The original name for Tavares was "Albatross Point." In 1836, Commodore John D. Sloat sailed his USS Constitution into what is now Tavares Harbor and named it after Albatross Point on recommendations from Rear Admiral James S. Fletcher of the United States Navy. The original village had only six homes and one church. The first post office in Tavares was established in 1857, and became known as "Port Royal." It received its current name of Tavares Naval Air Station on October 1, 1954. The air station has been home to various types of aircraft including bombers, fighter jets, helicopters, amphibious vehicles and ships since it opened its doors to service in World War II on December 8, 1942. As part of the military buildup during World War II that followed Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 (the day America entered war), Captain Eben Jagerman ordered construction of an airfield at this location with long runways suitable for use by American bombers operating out of Pearl Harbor under Lieutenant General Curtis LeMay's command. There were two relatively short runways which could handle either fighters or bombers only - one measuring 3/10 mile wide and leading east-west across the harbor mouth; another measuring 2 3/4 miles long ran north-south nearshore over a point just south of Cape Canaveral Peninsula where three large warships lay moored for bomb testing purposes before they were moved into dry dock for repairs or further operations during wartime times; both runways could handle transport planes because there was a separate taxiway connecting them both directly to hangars adjacent to each runway - not like present when most sports Aircraft are constructed these days which have several sets of parallelrunways some distance apart thereby making it more difficult if not impossible to do any takeoffs or landings without assistance! These two short runways allowedAmerican pilots flying Liberators ... carriers intruder missions ... over Japanese positions conducting bombing raids against their homeland—to fly sorties numbering up to twelve hours nonstop! This typeof mission would continue until 1945 when all enemy land forces had been destroyed thus ending hostilities between America and Japan! For many years thereafter Port Royal served as an operational training ground for officers destined for commands afloat or ashore throughout southeast Asia Commanding theaters such as Saigon AND ManilaOperation Wesak!! Many aviation veterans who fought during WWII still live( Retired USAF Colonel Ralph Flanders)in Andalusia County today………..

Tavares was founded in 1847 by Father José Tavares and his wife, Juanita. It was the first Spanish settlement in Florida. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its strategic location on the Gulf of Mexico and its natural resources. In 1898, after a period of Spanish rule, Tavares became part of the United States as part of the Treaty of Paris following World War I. The town continued to grow until it reached its current size in 1960. The Tavares community is located on 1,200 acres (4 square kilometers) at the mouth of Lake Monroe. It has a population of about 4,000 people today and consists primarily of Spaniards from Florida who continue to maintain their cultural heritage. There are also sizable African American and Native American populations. Many local businesses remain active including fishing, boatbuilding, agriculture, manufacturing and tourism. Father José Tavares is regarded as one of America's most significant Hispanic missionaries and he left an important legacy in Tavares which continues to be celebrated today with celebrating events such as the annual Dia de los Muertos parade which takes place on October 15th each year and several other festivities unique to the community such as Fiesta de las Flores which celebrates flower growth throughout December and January; Fiestas Patriarcales; Lucha Libre Day; etcetera
