The town also includes two golf courses - one operated by the Municipal Golf Association and one run by Pathway Played Here Incorporated - which together account for over 100 golf tournaments played annually in Tavares. The name "Tavares" comes from the Native American word "tawan," meaning "place where there are trees." John Tavares purchased land at what is now Tavares Elementary School in 1905 and built a home there that he named "Pinecrest." He later donated additional land to form what is now called Pine Crest Park which still stands today and offers hiking/walking trails, picnicking areas, ball fields, swimming pool/, tennis courts (/Southwestern Tennis Association Men's Club), clubhouse /Rochester Country Club (), health food store (/Healthy Choice Health Store) and boat launch ramp / Panama Canal Boat Launch Ramp (). In 1906, when school first started in Tavares Elementary school (named after John Tavare), it was just a few classrooms with no other facilities nearby so students would come from all around Monroe County for instruction at this new school! Over time though, more classrooms were added until it became an elementary school with 9th through 12th grades serving students from all parts of Monroe County! Today there are 17 schools within 1 mile radius of our beautiful little town limits!
