In Tavares, Florida, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune is home to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines. The battalion was first activated in December 1944 and has been deployed to many different locations throughout Latin America and Europe. The battalion has a long history of supporting military operations. They have participated in combat missions both before and after 9/11. After September 11th, the battalion became known as “the regiment” because they were responsible for guarding U.S Embassy personnel and other sensitive individuals. In November 2001, the battalion transferred to Kuwait where they participated in Operation Enduring Freedom. Since then, they have also been stationed at Bahrain and Qatar. The 1st Battalion 3rd Marines are one of the oldest battalions within the Marine Corps and their legacy goes back to World War II when they first arrived on shore leave in Cuba with their unit embarked on USS Lexington (CV-2). From there, they sailed back to sender with supplies and reinforcements for The United States Navy’s Asiatic Fleet which was fighting against Japan at that time. This deployment marked a turning point for them as it taught them how to fight from ships afloat without any limitations or support from land-based forces. Ultimately, this experience would help shape their future career as Marines who serve abroad today!

The Tavares post office opened in 1892 and closed in 1984. Tavares was named for Captain José Tavares de Sousa y Castro, a Portuguese explorer who explored Florida during the 17th century. According to the 1990 US Census there were 1,521 people residing in Tavares when it was included within the Jacksonville–Boca Raton MSA; however this number had increased to 2,022 by 2000. The percentage of Hispanics has also grown from 6% in 1990 to 11% by 2000. Tavares is located on U.S-1 south of Interstate 95 and east of Jacksonville International Airport. It is bordered by Holmesboro to the west and Holmes Beach to the north while Boca Raton lies to its east across US-1 and Jupiter Inlet Bay

The Marines were called to duty during the Mexican-American War and fought in many battles including Battle of Pueblo. They also served in the Spanish-American War. In World War I, they helped lead the effort to defeat Germany and Austria-Hungary. The Marines also played an important role in the Vietnam War by fighting against North Vietnamese forces. Tavares is a small town in Sarasota County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Palm Beach–Boca Raton–West Palm Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Tavares comes from the Indian word "ta'vara", meaning "place of plenty". The first white person to live in Tavares was George Fox who arrived in 1793 and erected a sawmill on the banks of the Santa Fe River. In 1821, Captain John Lattimore built a cabin on what is now State Road 6 near today's intersection of US-1 and SR-92. Captain Lattimore's cabin served as an early post office until 1826 when it was moved to its present location six miles south of Tavares on CR-2 (now US-1). In 1868, two brothers named Snively bought 1/4 mile (0.6 km) east of where Tavares now stands a piece of upland land known as "Mountain View". They renamed their purchase "Tavares" after their father, Samuel Tavares Sr., who had owned it since 1795 when he sold it to Major James Purdy for £10 sterling. In 1878 Major Purdy donated property northeast of Tavaris for use as a school ground and churchyard. In 1886 rifleman Alfred Crosby added .30 caliber shooting range and store to village hall which still stands today with additions over time including: three homes (1912), four barns (1914), three choirs(1972), one gymnasium(1975), two fireplaces(1977), one water tower(1978), one cemetery (1982). A local man by the name of Sperry donated land northeast of Tavaris in 1922 for use as an airport runway. The Village Board designated this area Airport Boulevard which continues to be used today by airplane traffic congestion during winter months only
Tavares, Florida was founded in 1824 by Captain John Tavares. The town grew up around the wharf that was built on the mouth of the St Johns River. In 1892, Tavares became a city and it continues to grow today.
