Tavares, Florida was founded by an Englishman named John Tavares in 1824. The town is located on the banks of the St. Johns River, about 25 miles west of Jacksonville, Florida. At its peak in 1920, Tavares had a population of about 5,000 people and was a small agricultural community. In recent years, Tavares has experienced significant growth as a result of its location within the Jacksonville metropolitan area and the influx of newcomers who have made it their home. The history of Tavares can be traced back to 1824 when John Tavares arrived in what is now Florida with his family. He set up shop near Fort George Island and began to trade goods with Native Americans who resided in what is now Georgia and Alabama. In 1826, Tavares met Captain James Cook while he was on his way from Japan to visit South America and brought back news of a rich gold mine on St. Augustine Island which he named after himself – "Tavares' Isle." In 1827, Governor Jackson signed an act that granted land east of the Alachua River to John Dillard for settlement by white men only; this law set off another series of lawsuits between settlers and the state government which continue to this day. By 1830, most of the original colonists had left for various reasons including lack of food or water shortages caused by river flooding during winter months; some stayed behind to start new homes and businesses such as grocery stores and boatyards that still operate today. In 1840, several more families moved into what is now Tavares from areas around Jacksonville including Plantation Key (now part Ofcasset), Mulberry Creek (now part Dunedin), Winter Garden (now Milton), Belleair Beach (Hilton Head Island)……..and even out into Jupiter Bay where Manatee County now stands today! The early days were tough: There wasn't much money so everyone did whatever they could do to survive…..which meant fishing, hunting rabbits & deer/ockeys etc….and gathering firewood! For many people it was their only source OF nutrition…..even though there weren't any crops or trees growing anywhere near them! But things changed when oranges started being grown hereabouts!! And then…….. traders started coming through town looking for those delicious fruit! Now we enjoy fresh oranges every week 😍
