The landing company built homes, a wharf, and a light house on what is now known as State Road 1A. By 1840, Tavares had a population of about 200 people and was home to several churches and schools. About 1850, the Landing Company developed what is currently called Old Town into a thriving community with businesses such as grocery stores, banks, pharmacies, and hotels located along State Road 1A. By 1870, there were over 2200 people living in Tavares Beach
