The first permanent settler was John Tavares, who built his own cabin and called the place "Tavares." In 1800, Tavares sold his land to Nicholas Lowndes for $2,000. In 1821, following the Seminole Wars, the United States acquired Florida from Spain and renamed it after Commodore John C Jefferson's brother-in-law and predecessor as captain general of Pensacola Bay Territory - Captain James K Polk. The town was platted in 1824 by Colonel William H Wilkinson, with plans to serve as a port on Pensacola Bay. However, development only began moderately until 1830 when navigation improvements were made at nearby Key West. The town became an important commercial center and grew rapidly due to its location at one of the most important points in coastal Southwest Florida - next to two large salt marshes capable of holding ships waiting to enter or leave Pensacola Harbor. The town reached its peak during Reconstruction (1865–1913) when many new arrivals landed here seeking employment in what had become known as "the Great Migration". In 1915, Tavares became a city after annexing neighboring Santa Fe Beach. As Tampa continued growth within itself over time it annexed other neighborhoods including Stonington (1948), Neptune Heights (1959), Hyde Park (1963) and Dunedin (1971). After years of being divided between Hillsborough County () and Pinellas County (), Tavares finally merged with Hillsborough County on December 15th 2006 ().
