Today, many of Tavares' residents are engaged in various forms of business or professional activity including real estate agents, insurance salesmen, teachers, attorneys, nurses and other health care professionals. One significant event from early history happened on January 1st 1912 when Disney World opened its gates for business for its first season as an amusement park located on Lake Buena Vista across from today's golf course which would later become Disney World Resort. That year saw also saw construction commence on what would become one of Tampa's most famous landmarks; The University of South Florida (USF) Campus which stands today as one of Tampa Bay's most popular tourist destinations with students enrolled in over 100 colleges and universities throughout central Florida including USF's own wing within Walt Disney World Resort known as "The Mall". In 1951 both USF campuses merged becoming one university under then President George H W Bush before eventually folding due to budget cuts back in 1995 - marking only the second time such a large university had been merged into a smaller city/county/region (the other being Miami-Dade Community College).
