The town of Temple Terrace, Florida was founded in 1892 by J.C. Talbot and his wife, Anna Bowen. The town was named after the biblical temple of Jerusalem. It became a hamlet after the railroad arrived in 1902, and started to grow when it became a stop on the Jacksonville- Tampa Railway. Temple Terrace had its first incorporation as a township on December 21st, 1912. In 1928, the name of the town was changed to Temple Terrace, Florida by an act of the Legislature. The original post office closed in 1936 and is no longer in operation. In 1933, Temple Terrace lost its status as a township to Gainesville because it failed to meet all requirements for statehood set forth by the Legislature. Gainesville re-incorporated the town on October 1st, 1934 under new name of Gainesville Beach Township which remained in use until 1970 when it was changed back to Temple Terrace again due to popular demand from residents who preferred that name over any other suggestions given at that time including: Gainesville Heights or Northgainesville Township
The first Europeans to visit the area were Spanish traders in the early 16th century. The area was part of the province of Cuba until 1821, when it became part of the United States. In 1835, with American expansionism on the rise, Florida was added to the Union as a state. The name Temple Terrace is derived from this era and refers to a hill located near what is now downtown Orlando.
