Temple Terrace is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Daytona Beach–Daytona Beach–Ormond Beach micropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Temple Terrace was Wm. Ayer in 1892 and his family removed from Tennessee to this location. In 1898 Mr. & Mrs. Jno Fenton built a home on the present site of Temple Terrace Elementary School which still stands today as one of the most notable examples of Colonial Revival architecture in central Florida In 1904 the townsite was patented to John Hartsfield and Elisha Laughlin by patent 887,636 On July 15th 1907 Ira Cushing erected a Progress Post Office on an old salt barrel found near where Third Street now ends The first post office operated for three months before it was discontinued because postal service had been suspended due to World War I . On December 12th 1916 Jno Peele started operating a grocery store at 5TH and Church Streets cornering Commercial Avenue . This store continued until 1951 when it closed because of lack of customers Stated reasons were that no one wanted to drive six miles down Commercial Avenue for groceries when there were several stores closer to town . On October 2nd 1923 Temple Terrace had its first fire after being lit by mistake while someone was turning off a light switch

Temple Terrace is a census-designated place in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 8,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The community was founded by Methodist missionaries in 1892 as a small town named after their school in Illinois. They renamed it Temple Terrace in honor of their patron saint, Templeton Roemer Sr., who had been an important figure in Methodism's early growth in Florida. The original town site lay on a swampy tract about northeast of present-day Jacksonville and south of Clearwater Beach. The first post office opened at the town site on November 3, 1892. Over time, the name changed to Temple Terrace to avoid confusion with other nearby towns that bore similar names such as Belleair and Cutler Lake. 2
The first white settlers in what is now Temple Terrace, Florida were James and Esther Post. They arrived in 1821 and started a farm on the banks of the St. Johns River. The Post family ran a sawmill, gristmill, blacksmith shop, and store until they sold their land to George Rogers Clark in 1837. In 1838, General Andrew Jackson visited Fort Moultrie on the St. Johns River and was impressed by the fort's cannons and its location across from what is now Temple Terrace Elementary School. He ordered General Steele to move the fort to this new site and named it for him. In 1841, about 100 people moved from Georgia to fertile farmland around Temple Terrace for the newly founded Gadsden County. The Post family soon lost their property in this area because of flooding but kept their home at 4200 Estero Road until 1923 when they sold it to Julius Weisenthal who made it his home until his death in 1965. In that year, it was purchased by Harry Blease who operated it as an agricultural research center until he donated it to the city of Daytona Beach in 1978. It has been used as a library since 1978
