Temple Terrace is a town in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Temple Terrace were farmers and their families who arrived from South Carolina in 1819. Colonel John Saucier and his family built a home on the site in 1830. The town's name was derived from nearby Spring Creek which served as the community's main water supply. In 1853, the United States Army established Fort Myer on the east side of Spring creek for military purposes only and nothing else happened until 1861 when Union forces burned down Fort Myers and moved into Duval County to take over that county seat, which they did on November 3rd of that year. On July 11th 1865, Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House after a three-day battle that ended with more than 620 casualties on both sides including many women and children who were taken prisoner along with General Lee himself. The first post office in Temple Terrace was opened in 1851 by Alfred Hickey and it continued operation until 1886 when it changed its name to Jacksonville Post Office #1 due to new postal regulations then being put into effect by Congress which favored larger towns with more services than small villages like Temple Terrace which had no post office at all. It wasn't until 1901 when territorial Governor John Ireland allocated land north of Uptown Jacksonville for an educational institution called Flagler College - now University of Florida - but at first there wasn't much done about it as most people thought it would just be a white college similar to Gainesville while Stetson University got started right away right next door (it still does). In 1905 Flagler College relocated to its current campus adjacent to Jacksonville Landing where today you can find plenty of artifacts from that era such as cannons dating back to 1798! In 1912 Flagler College merged with Rollins School of Medicine (founded 1909) becoming Rollins School Of Medicine & Health Sciences through mergers and acquisitions throughout ensuing years until finally taking its current form as Rollins School Of Medicine And Health Sciences/Flagler College Medical Center on October 1st 2005! Temple Terrace was a plantations in the state of Florida. It was located on the lower Seminole River, about two miles north of Sanford. The plantation was surveyed in 1795 by George Washington and named for his father General James Temple. The first owner of the plantation was John Wetzel, who sold it to Jethro Coffin in 1814. In 1829, it passed from Coffin to Andrew Johnson, after which it changed hands several times before being acquired by Abel Dent in 1861. The Dent family continued to run the plantation until 1971 when it became part of the Walton family's estate.
