Temple Terrace is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Temple Terrace was Elisha Green who purchased land from the Creek Indians in 1824. Green built his home on the current site of Broad Street and named it "Temple Terrace". By 1830, most of what would become Temple Terrace had been surveyed and sold by Major General James Wilkinson who led an expedition through present-day Polk County in 1828 to explore new territories for Florida. On October 12, 1829, Wilkinson made a survey of all of what would become Polk County and added it to Florida as part of the Northwest Territory. In 1840, landowner JnoMoses Wiggins donated two tracts totaling 640 acres (241 ha) to build a Presbyterian church on these lands which were known as "Wiggins' Hill". The church was completed in 1845 and renamed "Temple Terrace" after its donor's wife, Anna Temple. In 1850, when Gulf Railroad reached thisarea via a branch line from Stonington Landing eastward through Clearwater Harbor into Jacksonville Bay, templeTerrace became one of its stops along with other towns on that line including Live Oak and Dunedin As railroads grew more important throughout much of America during the late 19th century they began serving larger cities such as Tampa Bay where they merited separate tracks leading out to points like Tampa or Jacksonville but not so much to smaller towns such as Temple Terrace which served primarily passengers arriving at various stations along their route. This changed with the opening of Interstate 95 which passed just north of Temple Terrance near Clearwater Boulevard cutting off rail traffic heading east while continuing service south to Miami Beach or West Palm Beach). By World War I, Temple Terrace had a population of around 1,000 people. After the war, things began to unravel for the town as it lost its manufacturing base and many residents moved away for new opportunities. However, whenTempleUniversitywas established in 1924 it reopened many of the old mill buildings which allowed Temple Terrace to become one of Florida's leading educational communities. The current architecture of Temple Terrace is largely due to architect Alfred Cary who designed several important institutional buildings for both private and public use in this area during the 1920s-30s. In addition to his work on Temple University's main campus (now known as "The George Washington Univ.), Cary also designed numerous other notable structures such as a library annex at Seminole Heights Boulevard and Commerce Street (1927), an insurance office building at NW Third Avenue (1928), and a factory plant at NW Third Avenue and SW Second Street (1929). His most well-known design however may be hisdesignedfortheFloridaInstituteofTechnologyin1950 which remains one of Tampa's most iconic landmarks today. Today, much like back then, Temple Terrace is an important cultural center for Tampa Bay region with its wide range of entertainers performing here each year including major league baseball players like Mike Piazza and Alex Rodriguez; Broadway shows like "South Pacific"and"Oklahoma!"; opera performances; world championships in various sports; etc. It is also home to some very interesting historical properties including two 17th century mills which are still operational today - one belongingtoSamuel Morse himself while the other house now houses offices for Florida Institute Of Technology .
