Temple Terrace is a census-designated place in Sumter County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The name "Temple Terrace" is derived from two Seminole words meaning "prominence" and "termite hill", respectively. The community was named for the temple on Temple Hill which served as a center for religious worship in early Florida. In 1837, an act of Congress designated Temple Terrace as a stop on the Floridian Railroad. However, due to lack of train service and other factors, the town never grew much beyond its initial small settlement until after World War II when it became an agricultural center with citrus production becoming one of its primary industries. During most of this time, there was no school in the community due to poverty and lack of money for building facilities. However, thanks to donations from local farmers and businessmen who saw potential in the town's growth, Temple Terrace finally experienced some level of educational success starting with its first high school opened in 1951 before annexing into nearby Jacksonville that same year. Today Temple Terrace remains an agricultural center with many small businesses based around crop production or processing services; however it also has become home to a number of new businesses specializing in everything from tourism to real estate development. Despite this continuing growth potential, there has been little recent effort made by either party interested in developing this portion of Sumter County outside Jacksonville's full embrace - including efforts by a group known as Keep Jacksonville Local which hopes to make significant changes soon within the boundaries surrounding Temple Terrace itself despite ongoing opposition by some residents who feel that their community will continueshrink should their efforts be successful
